Insert block on layer 0

Hello everybody,

before a big discussion is started - I know how layer "0" and blocks do work together. But I was wondering if it is important to insert blocks on a specific layer (if the objects inside the block are not on layer "0"), maybe layer "blocks" or if I could leave them on layer "0". Is there anything for or against it?

The only thing I noticed is, that if I have a block called "screw", which contains all objects on layer "0" (except center line) which I could insert on layer "visible" or "hidden", I can not select this block while I am picking all other blocks which are inserted on a different layer. It is a bit hard to describe...

Ok, then you get a short answer:

There are no  problems und unexprected side effects, but you have to think about the normal rules.

>"The only thing I noticed is,"

??? That sounds you are not totally familiar with "how layer "0" and blocks do work together."

I do not quite understand what you mean, because there is no unusual problem with the selection.

It can be a disadvantage, but also an advantage, the question is simply how to use the DWG and what you want to achieve, we do not know that in your case.

Think about what happens with (content) Layer0 when using the DWG as Block or as XREF

and if you live "my" unwritten rule like me: Never change properties of system layers.

My advice would be: If you do not know exactly why you put things on layer0, then leave it and use your own layer for it.

I am working with AutoCAD for more than 10 years and never used a full DWG as block (I am working as a designer for shop drawings and fabrication documents in facade engineering). I also worked with XREF a few months ago (for the first time!) - I did not needed it before, but for this one project it has been offered.

For my strict way of working I would like to have all blocks inserted just on layer "0" or "blocks" which will not work if I insert a block which objects get the informations from the layer on which it was inserted (layer "visible" or "hidden")...

All works as expected (for me) and as designed (by Autodesk).

So what is your question now?

If you like both, block-objects on LayerA, but properties from the insertion layer,

then use ByBlock value for color, linetype and so on.

You can insert your block on layer "MyBlocks", each object can hide/display by there layer and the color linetype aso comes from insertionlayer "MyBlocks".

And you can handle the visibility of all blockreferences (incl. the nested objects on different layers) by freeze "MyBlocks".

?
