I find that the objects selected when zoomed out get unselected when I zoom in

when I select some specific set of objects and zoom in to put in the final point, I note that the objects previously selected get automatically unselected, which ends up being very irritating. 

How can I ensure that whatever I have selected continues to be selected, whether I zoom in or not ?

usually and if you use mouse scroll to zoom in and out selected objects keeps selected till you finish your procedure.please till us how did you select objects and how did you zoom while selecting?

Just guessing ... check PICKFIRST to be set to 1 . 

Command: PICKFIRST
Enter new value for PICKFIRST <1>:

The Objects should visible on Screen by accept last point.
Its normal.

Since 2017 Sp1 its Changeable by a new Sysvar.

What version of AutoCAD are you using? AutoCAD 2017 & AutoCAD 2018 both support retaining off-screen selections. Prior versions do not.
