How to stop object corners turning red and locking???

Hi - I'm a zero knowledge user learning by doing.  It's mostly intuitive, but suddenly I don't know what I hit and when I click the corners of objects to move them, they turn red and stay locked and I can't unlock them and move things.  

Please help!  How do I make it stop locking like that?! 

Thank you - am losing my mind trying to figure this out.  I have to get these revisions done today.

What kind(s) of object(s)?  What are the "corners"?  It sounds like something on a locked Layer, except that in that case you could select an object but you would not be offered grips to click on, so I think it must be some other issue.
