How to remove text box so background colour shows through

I am designing a sign. I have coloured in the background rectangle, but there is a box around the text that won't go away. Anyone know how to make this disappear so the white letters just appear on the grey background? Thanks!

Hatch the box using solid gray on its layer.

The text on another layer.

Send the gray layer to the back.

and don't use pick point, use select objects when hatch.

Could it be the "background mask" property of your text is set to "yes" ?

When you edit the TEXT, select Mask and uncheck the "Use background mask".

I don't think so; I double-clicked on the text, then selected "Mask" under "Style" tab and the "Use bakckground mask" box is unchecked.

Thanks for the instructions. I'm unable to bring up that Hatch/Gradient box in your image though...
