Is it possible to attach a dwg file that is stored online (using the xref command)? If I try to copy paste the link, I get an error saying "invalid file name" and in the "select reference file tab" I cannot browse the file path.

Is the file stored on a cloud server or just on a website?

if you only wish to include a link to a file on a website in your DWG file, HYPERLINK command would be worth exploring https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Adding-a-hyperlink...

It is a .dwg file stored on a cloud server, and I would like to attach it as an xref

does the "cloud server" have a synced folder on your PC? If yes, you do it that way. That's built-into AutoCAD, like my OneDrive and DropBox are here

If no, find a way to get that feature on your PC first. Otherwise I'm not sure you'll find much of a solution.
