How do I stop Autocad 2017 from taking over multiple desktops in windows 10?

Autocad 2017 seems to have decided that it is the only program I need to look at on all of my multiple workspaces in windows 10. Once I make Autocad the active window, if I attempt to use the task view button on the task bar or the winkey+ctrl key command it just shows Autocad as the only thing on all of my spaces. I use these spaces to seperate different types of programs and workflows or to have quick access to information that might be pertinant to what I am working on without having to change the "active" window in order to see it.

Is there a simple setting or fix that is just escaping me? there doesnt seem to be an option for it in windows or in Autocad.

Much like spaces on a Mac, win 10 lets you create multiple "desktops" to open windows in that are separate from each other.

So I can open google chrome or something on one and have a cad program such as auto ad in another.

But they shouldn't show a window from one on the other unless I move it.

OK, I see what you mean.

Did this every work with other AutoCAD versions? Most of us just prefer to work with multiple monitors instead of relying on that.

I believe that Win10 is the first version to support multiple worskapces.  It's been a *Nix thing for years, but IIRC it's not been implemented in Windows before.  I would guess that was not something that was considered before shipping.

Never thought Win8x was worth the hassle, so my main machines at work and h9ome are Win7, the Win10 box is a woefully underpowered decade old Core2 -- did 8 implement multiple desktops/workspaces?

Win 10 was the first version with multiple desktops being built into the system, as for whether or not it works with other versions of autocad I am not sure. I have only just started using Autocad again the last version I used was probably sometime around 2007? it was in highschool. Regardless, I have several other cad programs that I use often that allow me to switch between spaces without any trouble.

I wonder if it has something to do with then large number of dialoge boxes and inputs that making windows think that it is still the active window when using multi tasking key commands. Like trying to use alt-tab when you are still inputing data for a line?

I find the limitations not worth the experience of giving up multiple monitors:

"Unfortunately, Windows 10's multiple desktop functionality is still very limited -- you can't drag and drop programs between different screens, and you can't quickly jump to a particular screen without cycling through all of your open screens"

Hope you get an answer to your Q.

As of the time of writing, Windows 10 does support that functionality - that is drag and drop programs between different screens - if you go into task view.

Irrelevant though. I have been a fan of the multiple desktop feature on other platforms, and was overjoyed when I found Windows 10 has the functionality.

Purely because multiple desktops is a tool which reduces 'mental clutter' and allows the user to organize his workflow. This improves productivity.

It is ultimately more about the user and improving their process flow, than it is about functionality of the machine.

Big was my disappointment though, when I found Autodesk products don't have the functionality. Not only that, but they seem to be the only software that doesn't support virtual desktops, amongst many standard third party software applications that our company use.

Especially since Microsoft and Autodesk are strategic partners.

Can anyone say when we will receive a patch to fix this?

Considering recent events with upgrades and updates causing problems with AutoCAD, I find that hard to believe. I wouldn't hold your breath counting on a patch. New Windows features have historically been addressed in future versions and not the very next one. I'm pretty sure 4K resolution is still not supported.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

I just wanted to chip in, you can use multiple monitors as well as multiple desktops. I have three monitors and three separate desktops and each screen is used on all desktops. You can also drag and drop programs between different screens and by hitting Windows+Tab you can see all of your desktops and programs and switch quickly.

There is no issue with the desktops when using any version of Revit (14-17), but it does happen on both Autocad 16 and 17. I have noticed that if only one tab is open in CAD it only shows up in the one window it is supposed to. The moment you open another drawing CAD shows up in all desktops. I really hope we get a fix for this issue soon.

I'm having the same issue here. The behaviour only happens with multiple drawing opened. As a workaround you can set the TASKBAR command to 0.

The  downside is that only the current drawing will be shown when the user mouse hovers over the AutoCAD icon on the Windows taskbar.

But for me: Functional virtual desktops >> Taskbar previews.

This info should help Autodesk as well to resolve this issue quicker.

I did not know about that. I never really use the taskbar preview so I will use this workaround until Autodesk comes out with a proper fix. Thank you.

I use AutoCAD 2018 and this problem still persists on the 2018 version. To conform, setting the TASKBAR command to 0 as AMiltenburg suggested works on AutoCAD 2018. does anyone know if there will be an update to fix this problem?

Have you tried the currently posted 2018 updates yet?
No one here works for Autodek, so no one can tell you what might be coming up next.

I know this is a workaround for now, and it may not be the best solution for everyone, but it does work.  Might be worth marking as solution just so it's easier to find.

Brilliant. It worked perfectly. Was getting quite tired. Its a rather simple fix, but agree Autodesk needs to fix such issues. Cheers!

  • Still, it is showing in all desktops.
  • The same problem happens with DWG TrueView 2020.
  • I tried TASKBAR>0, (still, it's not working).AutoCAD multi display error.png

It's 2021, and this is still a problem. TASKBAR = 0 is still works to get around the issue.
