How can I get the broken-out section view in layout?

Hello. I am using AutoCAD 2017 and Inventor and solidworks.

I want to get the broken-out section view in layout when I working with imported 3D model. How can I get that? Recently I found some advantage of layout tabs, and I want to all mechanical drawing documentation work in AutoCAD.

(Attachment is just a example.)

Hi @Anonymous,

I know for sure that Autocad can insert views of an object from inventor..  Unfortunately I don't have inventor so I can't say for sure what happens (If the model is imported - or inserted as xref - or if the views only are shown???).

But I may be able to point you in the wright direction..

- Open a new dwg file..

- Go to the layout tab..

- Execute Viewbase, you will be asked if it's from a dwg file or from inventor? - Of course inventor 🙂 -  select the file..

- After that most likely you'll be asked to insert the elevation or plan and move to any direction to create the rest of the views..

- To add sections or details you ll find the commands in the ribbon - select section and then the view where the section line is drawn then place the section view.. - Same for details..

Good luck..

Hello @Anonymous,

I don't think this function is available in the same way as Solidworks - or maybe Inventor..

You can get orthogonal section with parts cutout and parts elevation by using the offset or aligned sections..

After finishing ViewBase :

From the layout tab in the ribbon > Create view panel > click the drop down menu called Section, and select offset or aligned section..

- Select a base view where you draw the section line..

- Move the cursor perpendicular to the section line up or down to create the view..

If by shape you mean outline, unfortunately i don't have a legitimate solution, both clipit and vpclip don't work on these views..

I may have a workaround though..

- You can use the command "wipeout" to mask the areas you don't want in view..,

- To hide the wipe out frame without turning it off, after finishing set the linetype of the wipe out to dotted and give it a very high scale so that you have only dots in the corners.. (turning the frame off makes the wipeout unselectable, you may move the view accdently without the wipeout..)

Hope that works for you..

Note: you also need to beware of DrawOrder, you need the WipeOut always on top..

Hi @Anonymous,

You can use 2 wipeouts.. see the pic.,

1- first I created 2 polygons completing each other (pic-1),

2- Then I applied wipout, p for polygon, e to erase the original polygon.. (pic-2)

3- I then changed the line type to a dotted one and gave a very high line type scale (10000).. as tu can see only dots appear in the corners.. (pic-3)

See the attached dwg..

@Anonymous,

Unfortunately VewBase viewports are not like ordinary objects, they can't be grouped..

If you don't need the "update viewport" functionality, i.e. your views are final, you can "exportlayout" to a new drawing by executing the command from the lay out..  It will become a normal block that you can clip using "clipit" and copy and rotate......
