help selecting individual objects, and removing endpoints

I am new to auto-cad so bare with me...

I am trying to edit a drawing i have received. i need to remove the thermostats shown on the plan and move them elsewhere, the only problem i have is when i go to select the box i want to move on the drawing, everything gets highlighted. i have a list of layers, but it seems as though the are all merged or something? any advice would be great.

The other thing is when i want to draw a line to show the cable going to the new thermostat position it just snaps to an endpoint along the wall, which is obviously very frustrating.

All i want to know how to do is receive a drawing and be able to take a few things out and move them about.

Try:

EXPLODE the drawing

Setting osnap

OSMODE use 0

Could the drawing be a block? You can try the EXPLODE command (assuming nobody has a problem with the drawing being exploded).

Try the snap to nearest option to pick a point on the wall but not have it jump to the endpoint.

When I explode the selected block it just disappears?

if you got the drawing from outside source and made with some programs other than plain autocad, try that.
