Not really sure what your issue with the hatch dialog box is, but I'll just say that I almost NEVER use it.
All of my hatches are on a Tool Palette.
Simply Ctrl-C a selected bit of hatch, and Right-click>Paste to a blank spot on a (new) palette. All current properties of the selected hatch are inherited to the new tool. You can then copy/paste the same tool in another spot, and adjust the new one's Properties, such as Pattern, Scale, Layer, Rotation, etc. Thumbnail Images adjust, and you can rename to differentiate similar. (My HorizPly & VertPly are the same in all except rotation.)
To use, click the hatch tool and then click in the area you want to hatch - presto!
(Single - one hatch area at a time - as far as I know).
Tool Palettes are GREAT - I have two others, mostly for Blocks, but some are just drawing objects that I want to have certain properties, without having to change layer, or something else. My first one was to draw a revcloud (with preferred layer, calligraphy style, etc) and copy/paste it to my CFK_TOOLS. Properties can be adjusted on the fly, but remain until changed back.

Yes, Change IS Good.
