Floating entities

I see reference to the term "floating entities" in the explanation of the command "color". I'm not  sure what would  be  considered a "floating entity". Can anyone help me  clear this up?

I've been an AutoCAD user for 20 years but am now involved in teaching students in the theatre industry and, although I believe this is an archaic command, I still need to  have clearer explanations for any questions I get.

The only thing i know of is geometry who's shape 'definition' is based on another piece of geometry that isn't really there. Think of a slab with a cylinder cut in it. The cylinder is a floating entity as its not really there though it defines the other object. I've heard those called a floating entity.

I have no idea what the color command would have to do with that unless its choosing a color of the floating entity... What is the source you are getting this from?

"What is the source you are getting this from?" Thats the question.

My answer without knowing where you read that:
I knowing about floating Viewport and
color "ByLayer", float the color of referenced Layer of the Object
color "ByBlock", float the color from Blockreference to the (byblock) Object into the Block.
