FLATTEN issues - altering objects appearances or error: "Invalid lweight number."

I'm trying to prepare a 500MB+ DWG incredibly sluggish file to try and make it useable. The file contains a lot of what appear to be elements exported from an unknown 3D software.

One of the things I'm trying is the FLATTEN command. When trying to use it there are two odd things happening:

  1. In about 50% of the cases, the command will throw an error: "Invalid lweight number". This happens regardless of whether I select Yes or No for Remove hidden lines.
I have no idea what this is. The only other reference to this error I was able to find was this thread, which also discusses FLATTEN command.
  2. In cases where the FLATTEN command doesn't throw an error, it typically completely alters the appearance of the object. As in, it will either remove most of the lines, polylines, etc. so that only a fraction of them is left, or will start introducing odd objects such as circles and ellipses that tangentially touch the lines that were there before issuing the command.

Any ideas on what I can try to troubleshoot this? I'm sorry that I cannot share the file or any of its components. I understand that makes it harder to answer, but the file is not only enormous, more importantly it's a proprietary information I cannot share. I hope you understand.

FLATTEN does too much to content, you sort of have to know ahead of time, and like you, the program and this tool do not like "unknown 3D' anything.

Looks to me like your DWG file need fixing ahead of you using anything convenient like FLATTEN command: since you cannot share (from an unknown 3d software, for real?), do all of these to it first yourself:
From your AutoCAD's HELP file (I'll assume 2025 but you can change that)
https://help.autodesk.com/view/ACD/2025/ENU/index.html?caas=caas/guidedtroubleshooting/csp/7DzUGhZRf...

Then this full list (every link i a link to a page with a long list):
https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/AutoCAD-File-Corru...

Then and only then can you try OVERKILL first then FLATTEN command after you try the flatten-alternate.

OR.... SEND IT BACK TO YOUR CLIENT AND TELL THEM TO HELP YOU FIX IT.

@paullimapa, I'll give it a try, thank you.

@pendean, yep, tried all of that. I would gladly send the dwg to the client but as the Van Kenobi meme says: "of course I know him, he's me" : ) That is, the dwg is from another internal department who has this fixing really low on the list of their priorities.

Oh well: if anything changes, a quick peak inside your DWG file by others may help you out at some point.
