Fix for the Excel problem after the latest Windows Update

If you need to fix the dreaded Excel bug introduced by the November Windows Update yet before Microsoft fixes it officially (and without uninstaling the Windows Update - as it contains also security fixes), you can replace just the complaining DLL - msexcl40.dll in Windows\SysWOW64.

Thanks @vladimir_michl,

I agree that this is a great work around. As I indicate in my post about this issue, that users can get a previous version of the DLL simply by temporarily uninstalling the updates.

Thanks again for your great contribution.

Hi @gcsjlewis,

Please take a look at my other post on this issue. I have been updating it as necessary to keep it as current as possible.  There is a link to an AKN Article that might provide additional information as well on how to remedy this issue.  Check out Option 3 to see if that solution works for your situation.

A Workaround,so I don't change anything, on my System.

Extract the data as .CSV,

Open the CSV in Excel,

divided data  by comma,

select all columns and set them to text

Import

with this extra steps, that take max. 2 min. you can extract your data to .XLS

not a great fan of installing 'fixes' without explicit recommendation of it dept. Needs attention for a  AutoCAD hotfix

what is 'Delete me' suppose to mean really? Maybe consider changing it into 'Not possible. Use .csv as output'

These are not Autodesk's fixes.

Both the original problem and the current solution results from Microsoft's hotfixes. If you installed the October MS updates (causing the problem), you should be free to install the November MS updates (solving the problem).

HI @hanslammerts,

A hotfix from Autodesk is not possible as the problem is on the OS side. Please check with your IT group for help getting the latest updates for your OS so that the problem can be remedied on your system.

It might happen the issue is related with the latest November Windows update so, rollback to the previous version Windows version and check whether Excel is performing or not.

If Excel is performing well, without any issue then check the Windows update issue.

So fix the update related issues perform a SFC scan, or update the device drivers from the manufacturer website, DLL files issues and others.

I've been having a problem with my Excel (2003 version) since today's Microsoft update.

The file opens fine. I can make a single entry fine.

Once I make an entry, I cannot click on anything else -- no other fields within the file, no buttons on the toolbar. I can't even use a short cut to save the file. Clicking on anything else after making a entry within the file will shut down the program.

MS Customer Support was a joke. Their solution (after 90 minutes of my time) was to get a newer version of Excel.

Well, I shouldn't have to get a newer version, as the one I had worked perfectly fine (on a daily basis) until today's (Sunday's) update.

I tried uninstalling and reinistalling Office. It didn't work.

I tried uninstalling the upgrade. It still didn't work.

Nothing works. I need this program to work. I use it every day, and now it won't work.

Thank you.
