Filling (hatching) Objects

Filling (hatching) Objects

I am trying to create two solid blocks. I started by drawing a rectangle. I then extruded them to the height that I wanted. I've tried using the hatch command to fill it. When I select hatch, it tells me to select an internal point. I then select any of the points since I want to fill the entire object by the time I'm through. I keep getting a message starting that "A closed boundary could not be determined. Any suggestions? I've been able to fill two sides total (1 from each block) but I'm not sure what exactly I did different than the other times.

Hello @Anonymous,

Your piece is already a solid, if what you want is to shade each of its faces, you must locate the UCS on the face you want to shade and then make it one at a time.

Hi,

I typed "UCS" then placed it at the corner so that it is perpendicular and
parallel to the different faces. I've then selected "gradient". I was not
able to apply a gradient to any of the faces other than the very bottom one
(which I was able to do even without setting the UCS.

Type UCS, then FACE to locate on a face you select, then the hatch will work.

On a 3D Solid, Hatching is probably not what you want.  Look into the MATERIALS command in Help, and related topics.

I'm having exactly the same issue with the same error, and would love a solution. In my case, I'm trying to make a 3D block look like glass, and after several hours I have gotten nowhere. To the original poster: If you solve your issue, could you post step-by-step instructions? I will probably be able to follow it more easily since we are both new.

Hi,

>> I'm trying to make a 3D block look like glass

Have you read through the whole thread? The suggestion to use materials instead of hatches is your solution.

Please follow these steps:

  • create a box
  • switch to visual style "X-Ray" or "Conceptual" or "Realistic"
  • start command _MATBROWSEROPEN
  • within the Autodesk library scroll down to / and select "Glass" on the left side
  • on the right side select the type of glass you prefer
  • drag & drop it onto your box in the graphic area
  • adjust view (camera) and lights if necessary
  • start command _RENDER

If that is not what you are looking for then please show us a sample of an image how you would like to have AutoCAD presenting a glass material/effect.
