File name desappears, replaced with the shortcut

Hello

I set favorites in Windows Explorer to point to different folders. So I created shortcuts on the desktop that point to my different folders with names in the clear. Then, these shortcuts were pinned in quick access to find them easily in the Windows Explorer.

In Autocad, in the file opening window, when I click on Favorites, I find all my shortcuts and with the text in clear. Great, I click on a favorite, I find myself in the right folder, but, because there is always a but, the name of the file disappears in favor of the name of the shortcut. To overcome this, you must copy the file name, click on the shortcut, and paste into the file name to return correctly. It's a bit difficult, especially when you have complicated names (graphic chart). This is not a problem of use because it works well with other software. If Autodesk could correct this slight bug.

Hi @patrick_35,

Please tell me which OS you are using. Windows 10 uses QUICK ACCESS instead of FAVORITES so I can try to test with that instead.  Please also tell me which version of AutoCAD you are using.

Hi @patrick_35,

I don't want to sound too stupid here but is it possible to make a quick screencast video for me?  When I access my "Favorites" in the AutoCAD Open window, the file names look normal.  Perhaps i am doing this differently and want to make sure that I can get this to the team if it is indeed something that AutoCAD is doing.

Hi @john.vellek

I'm sorry for responding so late.
No, you're not stupid, maybe it's me that I did not express myself.
Here's a screencast of the problem.

Please, try this solution.

  1. Create a new Library named how you want the shortcut to appear
  2. Go to the Properties of this new Library and add your intended target folder
  3. Change the library icon, if you wish
  4. Right-click on this new Library and choose 'Pin to Quick Access'

Thank you for your reply, but that's what I did.
This does not prevent Autocad from changing the name of my file by the name of the shortcut.
The same manipulation made on Excel for example is not a problem.
It's not a big deal. When we know the problem, copy the file name before clicking on the shortcut, then paste to find the name, but it's boring in the long time.

Hi @patrick_35,

Does this happen if you save in 2018 format?  I am wondering if the version change makes any difference.  In the mean time I will try to replicate this on my side too.

Thanks for the video.

[EDIT] Nevermind, I can duplicate this easily too. I will get this logged for the team to investigate.

You can do this with a unsaved file.

The save file dialog get the filename if you clicking on a simple lnk file.

I like the idea that adesk should fix this.

Acad (and other programs) should only take the filename if you hit on files with valid extension.

You can not save as lnk, so the dialog should ignore that file(name).

Hello

@john.vellek
The format change does not change anything.

@cadffm

It's not just for save. I took this example which is the most telling. It's the same with a pdf print (DGW to PDF).

In your screen cast you are selecting Save As so the file name will appear as the folder, as you show, because AutoCAD has no way of knowing what file name you are going to save to.  If you use the File Open and use shortcuts it will act differently and as expected.

Hi @GrantsPirate,

I tried this with even a SAVE and any shortcut and discovered the same problem as described by @patrick_35.  I logged it for the team to investigate.

The Shortcut name is a file, so if you click once it just puts that name in the File Name line, But if you click twice (since it is a shortcut) the name will still be there but the list of files available in that folder shows.

Or I am completely not understanding the issue.

Yes, the file name is replaced by the name of the shortcut.
When you open a file, the behavior is the same, except that you select a file and it is not relevant.
With a saveas, the file is renamed by the name of the shortcut.
We have the same problem when we create a pdf or a plt.

This is a problem related to the dialog box, not the features of Autocad.
