1. The best format is the native format of used programversion.

2. The fileformat you can see after you opened a file, in textscreen [F2]

 or

Open the dwg/dxf with a texteditor, in the first two lines you find the formatversion as "ACnnnn" code.

For example, AC1032 is formatversion 2018.

Or you need a plugin for windows to see the version in windows explorer and other programs

Your question has a very broad answer.  You can find a very comprehensive list of CAD file formats by extension >here<.

The native AutoCAD file extension is .dwg but this database extension gets revised every few years.  You may choose a target version of the .dwg file to save when working with AutoCAD.

The Drafix extension .dxf that is also very common with AutoCAD is a very broadly used extension for sharing AutoCAD files with other application platforms.

If you are seeking more specific information please state the question more specifically.

Hope this helps,

Correction...

The .dxf file extension is not a format bound to Drafix, as I mistakenly wrote prior, but instead is fully native to AutoCAD since 1982.

See >here< for a brief history if interested.
