FBXIMPORT/EXPORT for Autocad 2020

I would like to see a 2020 version of this fix for Autocad based products. I currently use FBXIMPORT to bring 3d Revit models exported to FBX into Civil 3D.

Thanks

What is the exact workflow that we should follow to export AutoCAD drawing files with assigned materials to FBX?

My previous workflow (AutoCAD 2017) was to export AutoCAD drawings to FBX with materials which would then work in InfraWorks. I have yet to find a workflow that allows me to do this in AutoCAD 2020.

I've tried using Navisworks Manage but the materials are not properly represented in Navisworks and the export does not include the materials. Similarly, I've tried 3DS but the materials are also not properly represented in 3DS.

I think Autodesk  do not provides  solutions. Users need import/export 3d objects between diferents autodesk's software. If they (autodesk) don´t want to solve the fbx issue, may be should be simplify the export/import 3d objects between his own software. The license price should be cover that issues, the new improvements on the new versions are not enought

That's your issue to decide if you want to stick with Autodesk or AutoCAD, I personally have no opinion on the matter as we do not need FBX export abilityfor our daily work.

FWIW current 2021 licenses today (November 2020) give you instant access to 2020-2019-2018-2017 and 2016 https://customersuccess.autodesk.com/articles/expanding-previous-version-access-to-5-versions-back-f...

@pendean, I've tried this solution but it does not work. I actually prefer using Navisworks Manage to export the drawing files to FBX because the file size is much smaller and the process is quicker but the materials do not show properly. The AutoCAD material mapping is not the same between AutoCAD and Navisworks. This does not matter for materials such as glass, steel, etc. but it does matter for non-linear type materials such as a table cloth with a pattern or materials with writing.

@Owackenreuther  @pendean

I've encountered the same issue here, trying to get materials through between programs. It's been a bit frustrating.

I built a free web-based tool to replace the removal of the FBX export functionality - feel free to give it a try.

Hi Natasha! Where can we beg for autodesk to put beck the fbx import/export functionality? It is a pain, since 3d dwg import still not works well in other products-usually it messes up the textures. It is very backwards to recommend older and older versions because of lost functionality. Why am I on a subscription then?

@balazs_istvan I agree. Autodesk, please add this feature back into AutoCAD.

Yes. That feature needs to come back. In the age of improved interoperability and attempts of enabling software talking to each other better (or at all) e.g. rhino\revit, revit\inventor, etc. this feature DELETE is strange indeed.

I heard from Autodesk today. Here they explained why the decision was made:

The reason for this decision by the product development group was related to vulnerabilities with the FBX tool. Here is a link that does go into some of the specifics on those vulnerabilities:  Vulnerabilities in the Autodesk® FBX Software Development Kit

Great to finally get some closure. Well done.

My free web-based DWG - FBX conversion tool is still available for use.

Also looking for feedback on it with respect to functions / performance .etc

Another work a round could be - use an old Autodesk software - "Autodesk FBX Converters and Plug-ins Archive" .. here you can download an old FBX conversion tool for FBX version 2013. If you only need to i.e. convert some graphics from NavisWorks to Autocad, it can convert to DXF. Works fine, just remember to set the correct format when exporting the FBX from NavisWorks.

And now the year is almost 2022. Any updates regarding that?

@bernardo.klosowski notice the new date from Autodesk to the same link provided above to answer your question https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/fbximp...

The presented solutions don't work.

Importing as a coordination model doesn't give me the snap points that I need.

The conversion using 3DSMax doesn't work becuase the program crashes.

This link should still work if you have a valid DWG file. https://devfme.abley.com/fmeserver/apps/DWGtoFBX

I haven't heard of any updates.

@andrewofabley, this is a good service but it is a band-aid fix that I cannot use while working on Projects that are guarded with NDAs. Also, it is not reliable because the service can go down tomorrow. If this was an App for AutoCAD 2020 that I could download and pay for then I would be willing to do that.
