extend and trim all not working

Anonymous
Not applicable

Running into all sorts of problems this morning....

When I use the "extend" and "trim" commands, more often than not I enter "tr/ex" and then right click twice to "select all". It has not been allowing me to trim unless I pick a specific selection of objects to trim off of.  What am I missing?

Thanks,

Michael

When you start the command, does it give you the option on the command line to "select all"?  I'm out the door for today but I know ACA has 2 different trim commands. The normal one works how you are saying, the other is AEC trim and it doesn't have the select all option. I don't know if autocad has this second command and I'll need to check tomorrow. Maybe a start though.

On a side note: When you are in either the trim or extend command, if you hold shift it will do the opposite of which command you are in. Basically you can only use the trim command and if you want to extend just hold shift before you mouse click. It gives this option in the command line but I've seen so many people that when I told them this it blew their mind.

Hi,

>> more often than not I enter "tr/ex" and then right click twice to "select all".  <<

i don't know why should you right click twice ?!! for both commands you should first select objects then enter to select the others needed elements for completing the command .

If I understand you right, you want to use the trim command as shown in the following screencast:
https://autode.sk/2IJr19y

You start the command, you klick twice the right mouse button to select all  and now you hope, all lines will be trimmed to a rectangle.

If so, then you are misunderstanding the trim command.

At first you are asked for the cutting edges. Here you can use all object selection methods (pick at object, or Window, Crossing, Last, Fence, W- or C-Polygon and so on) and must finish the selection of cutting edges with ENTER (or RMB). Also you can choose ENTER (or RMB) to select all objects in your drawing as cutting edges.

Now you are asked which objects to trim. Here you can pick at objects or use Fence(s) or Crossing Windows/Polygons until you finish the Command with an ENTER (RMB).

If you to the first request for objects to trim answers with an ENTER (your second RMB), then the command is finished before AutoCAD knows which objects to trim and nothing happens.

(Maybe I misunderstood your problem description, then ask again please)

I understand...

[tr] [return] then [return] again to accept "select all".

I often work the same way. But I've not ever seen that issue. Is it just in the one drawing, or is it in every drawing?

If it is just one drawing are you able to upload it without breaking any NDA's.

So it often happens that if I zoom in closer, it seems to work... I'm not sure why this is, and it is sort of a pain in the neck, but it seems to be working properly. And maybe was not a problem at all. Maybe this is another issue that someone might be aware of??

Thanks!

After typing "tr" or "ex" for trim/extend, I right click(equivalent to pressing enter, with my preferences) to confirm the command, and then right click again to select all before choosing objects to trim.

@Anonymousschrieb:

... and now you have to choose the objects to trim (Pick or Crossing Window or Fence).

If this doesn't work, maybe you have chosen too many objects (by selecting all), more than AutoCAD can edit? I don't know if there are any limitations in AutoCAD - I don't know any. (I tested with more than 500000 objects without problems).

Would you please upload a sample dwg here where we can see the issue.
