Export to PDF misses raster objects

Anonymous

Hi there,

When exporting a mixed document to PDF, a low setting of DPI shows al content.

But when setting high DPI for raster quality the raster image object will not be shown, only the vector objects appear on the export.

I need  higher levels of DPI to keep the quality (read resolution) high as possible.

Does anyone know what could be the problem?

I found a limit of 320000 x 320000 dots for raster object but when i make a calculation i do not exceed those limits.

The attachments show exports of different DPI's for vector and raster (see filename).

Another fact is that when i change the paper size to A3 i can double the DPI setting before things go wrong.

Could anybody be of any help?

Thank you in advance,

Jeroen

Hi Jeroen,

Please take a look at this AutoCAD file and let me know what you think. I opened the PNG file that I earlier provided in a photoediting application, selected ALL and then copy pasted into AutoCAD. While this embeds the bitmap, it is so large that I now receive warnings inside AutoCAD about object size limits.

Capture.PNG

Please keep in mind, AutoCAD is not designed to be a container for such large composite features. This is why one would plot to a PDF in the first place. Raster is raster and AutoCAD can't really change that.  Please explain the ultimate goal in this exercise? Is it to have a DWG containing a raster object that cannot be edited? Or is it to produce a clean PDF? Are these getting stored in a document management system of some kind? Are you looking to embed tags or some sort of Metadata in the file properties?

Please give me some more detail so I can do some more research.

Hi @john.vellek,

I the file, given by you, only a blank object appears.

The goal in this exercise is as follows:

- We are supplied with a TIFF file.

- We are asked to embed the raster object together with some vector based changes.

- The TIFF could be edited in paint, but we prefer Autocad for the following reason. As an example,
we have some newer drawings in DWG (containing modifications on a installation/machine) that we would like to implement in the original drawing.

Completely renewing/vectorizing would be the best, but time (and therefor money) is a problem.

- PDF is manditory to supply along the given DWG's.

- And yes the files are stored in a management system of our customer (on which we don't have any influence).

- No i don't have the intention to change METAdata.

Thank you again for your support,

Jeroen

Hi @Anonymous,

I suggest that you download a copy of RasterDesign. This application works in AutoCAD to insert or embed images and allows cleanup, rubber sheeting, cropping and even vectorizing.

I believe what you are trying to do in core AutoCAD is really beyond the capabilities of the core product.

I do use Raster design already.

Really loving the product.

This indeed gives some options, but we have to discuss this with our customer.

And still, embedding the TIFF file is not possible in combination with exporting to PDF with the same resolution.

For the best results i, again, have to attach the TIFF file, which is (still) not an option for our customer.

Hi Jeroen,

I am glad that you are enjoying your use of Raster Design.

I do think it is time to have a discussion with your client.  Each part of this process has technological restrictions and I don't think their goal is really obtainable within reason. I am not aware of any document management systems that can't handle linked files. Linking is there for a reason and I think you customer is going to have to accept that.

Most systems can also generate a preview or PDF as well on check-in to the system so I am not sure why you are being required to do that step as well.

I wish I could offer more options but I think you have reached the limits on this issue.

Hi @john.vellek

The discussion started already with our customer.

Luckily your and mine thought are on the same track.

Thanks anyway for the support!
