A coworker recently told me about this functionality that he used at a former employer. He could make a schedule in Excel, then select an area he wanted, Copy it to the clipboard, and then Paste Special in AutoCAD, selecting Paste Link, AutoCAD Entities, and it would paste as a table in AutoCAD, linked to the original Excel file. Then if changes were made to the file, they would be updated in AutoCAD.
However, we could not get this to work at all on our systems. Everything appears to be working right up until I click OK. The Paste Special dialog box shows the sheet name and cells where it says 'Source:'. If I select Paste Link > Microsoft Excel worksheet, that pastes fine. If I select Paste (instead of Paste Link) and select AutoCAD Entities that works fine as well.
Some other posts I've come across mention Excel and AutoCAD need to be the same bit (both of mine are 64-bit). I've tried both .xls and .xlsx. I've tried using our in-house AutoCAD .dwt template, as well as the ootb 'Open with no template - Imperial'. I've tried both model space and paper space. When I click OK for Paste Link > AutoCAD Entities, the cursor is briefly the standard Windows arrow, and then changes back to the AutoCAD crosshairs. Command line just shows _pastespec with no apparent errors or cancellations.
