Error: File currently in use....but it's not

I've got a user who, in Acad Mech 2019, when attempting to open up a file gets an error that states:

"xxxxx.xxxx.dwg is currently is use by (the user attempting to open said file and the user's machine). Would you like to open the file read-only?"

We've cleared his local working folder and his cache, still same issue. He also states he gets this error on Acad files he's never opened, which really puzzles me.

Any suggestions on how to clear this? Is there a "reset" option for Acad like there is for Inventor?

This may have nothing to do with a fix for you, but this morning in our office we had such a problem with one user and a DWG file: turns out the person next to them had the same file open previously and while it they had closed out of the DWG file earlier in the morning their AutoCAD session was still open.

Once that AutoCAD session was closed the problem went away.

Seems we may have finally found the fix!

This seems to have a perfect storm type issue with multiple items happening at the same time. From poor practices to user not following thru to IT not following thru.

I won't get into all of those and bore you, but having the user follow proper procedure, clearing the folder of "read only" and IT rebuilding his profile, things seem to be working fine now. I'll know for sure tomorrow after he's done a complete shutdown for the night and fires everything back up again.

So, rule of thumb if you run across this:

1. be sure to check the folder's read/write status

2. Be sure to only check a file out if you are actually going to modify it, read it out of vault if not

3. Be sure no one else is modifying the file at the same time you need to

4. rebuild your user profile as a last resort if all else fails
