Disable/Prevent XREF Selection

Hello everyobdy,

Is there a way to disable/prevent selection of XREF elements? I want to have it in my drawing but unable to be selected.

So as Rob and Suzanne discussed, I could have an XREF not visible on my screen and still be able to select it? Am I reading this right? This is wrong on many levels, first most a slowdown in productivity.
