Dimension not what DimStyle says it is

so I have a drawing that when i open it, without making any changes, my initial dimension string is miniture and not matching what the dimstyle says it shoudl be.  even when i "LIST" the dimstring or show "PROPERTIES" on the dimstring, it says it is a dim style that it is not.  the only way my dimensions will show up properly, is if i first select any other dimstyle, then reselect the style i wanted initially.

anyone know what is causing this and how to eliminate it from my drawing?  if i start a fresh blank drawing, i do not seem to have this issue.  it seems to be something embeded in my file.

hmmm, try this open a new blank drawing and the file with the problem in the same AutoCAD session

In the new dwg rename or copy the dimension style that is correct to a random name and save the dwg

Switch over to the wrong drawing and hit CTRL2

In design center select the tab for "open drawings" navigate in this menu to the “good” dwg find the new dim style that you just created and double click it.

Change a dimension to this new dim.  Or set current and make a new dimension.

Let me know.  I have some other ideas if this doesn’t work.

Those existing dimensions probably have overrides assigned to them. Post the DWG file if you suspect otherwise, but your description of the fix seems to fit.

TQ, your suggestion doesnt help me address the issue of why it is happening in the first place. I already have dimensions in my drawing that are correct, I can match properties if i want to .  my question is why the computer thinks this newly created dimension is the same as the others when clearly it is not.

here's what i get on my screen without changing any settings.

 incorrect dimension.png

and here's what i get (below), which is correct,  after selecting a different dim, and then returning to the dim style i started with/wanted.

correct dimension.png

I'm guessing its something embedded in the file, no idea what.  i tried purging but the goofy dim must be in a block or something because i dont see anything in the purge list that looks like it would affect.

Posting a sample drawing (even if it only contains only one object and one of the mis-behaving dimensions) is probably your best chance of getting to the bottom of this mystery.

Q:  Does the Update tool on the Dimension Ribbon Panel have the save affect as toggling to another dimstyle and back?  ( -dimstyle > apply command)

I dont understand what that command is supposed to do?  i created the "bad" dim, and then did the -dimstyle, apply, touched the bad dim, and nothing happened.... is that what you meant?

"Update" updates the selected Dimension to the current Dimstyle settings.  In the demo below, I'm using a dimstyle with DIMSCALE = 0 so I have only one Dimstyle and the dimensions automatically size (resize) to the VP scale.   In your instance, you'd have to make sure the correct Dimstyle was Current first.

(this is not intended to be along term solution, just a step in the troubleshooting process to see whether the dims will update without actually changing them to a different dimstyle first)

thank you Nestly & Pendean,

the issue seems to be resolved by going into my dimstyle manager and deleting a "style override" that appears under my dimstyle.  no idea how it got there, but somehting i can look out for now as i build on my file.
