Cylindrical Hatch Issue

Hi everyone,

I searched and did not find answer to this issue. Please have a look on attached picture and drawing.

The Cylindrical Hatch changes the look of a Cylinder when you stretch the block! if you change it to thicker Cylinder the limit that the colour diformation happens change. For example change it to 50mmDia then stretch more and you see it happens 😞

Any ideas please?

Thanks,

Behzad

HI bb1352,

You gave me an interesting problem to look at! I haven't used gradients enough to have seen this problem before. Since the gradients are center based, the various sizes all appear pretty similar at the center of the gradient pattern. I too am surprised that it becomes so radically different at the outer points of the boundary. Since the center point cannot be changed I started playing with the gradient angle and think that you might have a bit better results.

Please let me know if this workaround is sufficient to keep you moving forward.

I just didn't get what is the solution 😞

Good morning bb1352,

I am suggesting that the gradient is going to change as you are witnessing but I have been able to get slightly better results when I edit the hatch properties to change the angle of the gradient.  Give it a try and see if it helps

Hey,

Thanks. I tried but for the smallest angle acceptable which is 1 degree, the hatch won't look like a cylinder any more.

Cheers,

Hi bb1352,

It sounds like you are trying to get a somewhat "rendered" appearance in your drawing. Have you considered a using simple 3D model of the columns with applied materials? You could even do this in an xrefed dwg to keep things small and tidy.

John,

I don't use rendering at all nor 3d in typical drawings.

Simply when I stretch the object I want to know how to stop the cylindrical hatch from deforming.

Thanks

Hi bb1352,

I played a bit more with your sample drawing and discovered that I get better results if I remove the gradient hatch from the block and apply it outside of the block definition. It seems to behave much better when it is stretched.  See if this is a solution that might work for you.

Hey,

Thanks again.

Well, We draw dynamic blocks once to avoid drawing again. So I don't see this as a solution.

I found a way just now by trying GR_Linear instead of GR_CYLIN. The linear hatch do not damage as a result of stretch. To make this happen, I had to create 2 rectangles and coincident them to main rectangle of cylinder. Then created the hatches and walaaa...

However this is not the solution.

Question is why cylinder hatch gets damaged when stretched and I have no answers to this yet. If anyone has any idea, please advise. Thanks.

Cheers,

Hi bb1352, I am glad that you found a fix to your problem.

As far as the hatch gradient you were using previously, I have not had the opportunity to see how the pattern looks when printed, but it looks different on different monitors I have viewed it on. I then wonder is the "distortion" is only a screen issue or also one that occurs on hard copy.

Regardless, I believe the gradient is working as designed. It is center based and is not scalable so it will most likely look different at the ends of different length objects.

I am glad the other pattern is working for you. Please mark your post as the Accepted Solution if you consider it to be a valid workaround.

Thanks,

Ok I understand.

No problem. I will use linear gradient instead of cylindar where there is a change in size dynamically. It is just more work into it. Coincident Pramertic is very tricky and it matters not only on which object click first, but also which line of an angle within the object to hover your pointer on.

I wanted to leave the topic open so someone may find a solution. I read somewhere if solution is not found, a topic will be reviewed by autodesk programmers. Is that true?

Cheers?

Hi bb1352,

Leaving a thread open doesn't guarantee that it will get looked at differently especially if an item is performing as designed. I like to mark the workaround so others can move forward with their process rather than to think their is no viable way to work through the issue.

Threads will frequently get additional posts by others as more options arise.

Thanks for your contribution. Please feel free to offer suggestions and wish list items to AutoDesk as well as on User Groups such as AUGI. These items have made AutoCAD the strong and feature-filled application that we all use.
