Custom ribbons crashes

I have a custom ribbons cui that I've been using for years and use a lot. I have recently changed to Acad 2025 and are having issues with the ribbons crashing Acad. When opening the program I can see it loading various items. When it gets to loading ribbons it often crashes and closes the program and brings up the send error report window. It will crash 2, 3, 4 times before starting fully. Once it starts fully it runs fine and all ribbons and buttons work fine. I have unloaded the partial menu and now starts fully every time, so conclude the issue is with the custom ribbons cui. If I reload the custom ribbons cui it crashes the program and brings up the send error report window. How do I find what's causing the crashes and edit the file to fix it. I tried to attach a copy of the offending cui file here but it's not a supported file type.

Any help much appreiciated as I use these ribbons a lot.

Thank you

Cheers Dennis

One way to troubleshoot if you know what your custom partial ribbon consists of and still have access to the AutoCAD version that the partial ribbon loads successfully is to run the CUI command there and edit the partial menu. You can start by eliminating all but one of the smallest section of the menu & then see if this modified partial menu now loads successfully in 2025. If successful then, continue by adding back the next section and etc.

Have spent several hours doing as suggested. Started up my old laptop and Acad 2021 which I had been using for the last 5 years without any problems to edit the custom cuix. Have just upgraded to a new laptop and Acad 2025. The ribbon menu I had comprised 7 panels. I edited the cuix starting with just 1 panel and added each of the others. 2 of which caused crashes so I removed them. All the buttons on the 5 panels that worked are also duplicated as toolbars. The 2 that crashed were not duplicated as toolbars. I have duplicated them as toolbars and find that all the buttons work fine. They are simple quick set buttons, e.g. preset zoom scale buttons for viewports, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 1:5 etc, handy when detailing parts etc. Macro text "^C^C^Czoom;2xp;". Others that do a number of settings at a single click, e.g. Macro text "^C^Cviewres;;50;splinesegs;4;facetres;0.5;isolines;4;layernotify;0;layereval;0;layerevalctl;0;", also works fine on a toolbar. May not be these specific buttons that are causing the problem, just examples of what's on the panels, basic stuff that saves seconds that add up over a day, will need a few more hours if I'm going to try and eliminate individual buttons. What I don't understand is why they are fine on a toolbar but not on a ribbon panel.

In 2025 (well, also in 2021), CUI command has a TRANSFER tab that works really well, all you need to do is ensure your 2021 CUIx file is on the new computer in a folder you can easily find, then just drag/drop

Thank you , yes. That's how I created a new custom cui adding ribbon tabs 1 at a time testing. What I don't understand is why the original custom cui worked fine in 2021, and all the buttons still work fine on toolbars, but not as ribbon tabs in 2025. Stranger yet is that it would crash on start up, when loading ribbins, several times, then finally start and everything would work perfectly for hours.

No idea, you'll have to share your 2021 CUIx file (and other partials you created) for that answer: if you can of course.

I tried to upload the cui file on my original post but wouldn't allow it. Said unapproved file type. I will try and get the cui and relevant files, button bitmaps and lisp files zipped up and upload on Sunday.

Uploaded my custom cui and the bmp's for the buttons. Still crashed when I load the whole custom cui yet is fine with parts of it. Can load any of the ribbon panels separately and it works fine, but all together crashes.

Thanks for the files. I unzipped your folder to my desktop, I added the folder to the search paths in OPTIONS>FILES tab, restart AutoCAD 2025, the used CUILOAD command to load up your CUIx file.

I used CUI command to turn on all of your toolbars, and save it all as a custom Workspace.

Some of your custom-lisp/tools buttons report "unknown command" but they all work.

I closed and restarted R2025 several times now, and clicked on many buttons each time.

I can select other workspaces and come back to this one at will. No issues.

I am unable to get 2025 to crash as you've reported. I am running the latest update though

Thanks for that. I've done a couple of short video's of my screen and what happens. Is there somewhere I can upload these to, too big for here even zipped. Sorry about the clarity, using my phone to video my screen and keep my hand steady.

Your OneDrive or GoogleDrive or DropBox account should be fine to use to share.

Link to video files.

I've been trying to find a log file or error file that will tell me what is happening when it crashes but without luck so far. Any suggestions where such a log file may be hiding.

Why does your AutoCAD 2025 show 2020?

pendean_0-1714482244042.png

This is the correct menu

Do this

Then, without restoring or migrating anything from anywhere when you restart 2025, follow my instructions to how to load your customizations.

Custom cui issue process.

1. Reset settings to default as suggested.
2. Open Autocad, open save close a few files. Check is showing the right version under help, Yes. Close Autocad.
3. Repeat "2"
4. Open autocad, Goto "Tools>Customize>Interface" and edit shortcut keys to my preference. Goto "Tools>Customize>Edit pgp" and update to my preferences.
5. Repeat "2" 3 times.
6. Open autocad, Goto "Tools>Customize>Interface>Transfer", create new cui file and load in toolbars from the full menu I sent you. Goto customize and load new cui. Apply, save open file and Close autocad.
7. Repeat "2" 3 times.
8. Open autocad, Goto "Tools>Customize>Interface>Customize", Unload new cui, make a copy, Goto tranfer and edit new cui file and load in Legacy Image tile menus from the full menu I sent you. Goto customize and load new cui. Close autocad.
9. Repeat "2" 3 times.

At this stage everything is fine. And the same as previously.

10. Open autocad, Goto "Tools>Customize>Interface>Customize", Unload new cui, make a copy, Goto tranfer and edit new cui file and load in Ribbon tabs and panels from the full menu I sent you. Goto customize and load new cui, Apply and close "Custon user interface" window. Autocad crashes.
11. Rename the new cui file so autocad can't find it.
12. Open autocad, Goto "Tools>Customize>Interface>Customize", Unload unresolved new cui, apply, close autocad.
13. Repeat "10", "11" & "12" loading only a couple of ribon tabs each time, varied the tabs so have tried all the tabs in the menu in various combinations. Autocad still crashes with any more than 3or4 tabs.

At this stage I thought maybe the reset wasn't enough.

14. Complete uninstall Autocad 2025. Restart computer. Delete files and folders left behind after uninstall. Restart computer.
15. Install Autocad 2025. Restart computer.
16. Repeat "2" 3 times.
17. Install Autocad update. Restart computer.
18. Repeat all of above.

After 9 hours I am back at square 1 with autocad crashing with my full custom menu loaded.
I thought about what you said you did saving as a custom workspace. Still crashes.

Cheers
