Creating a true elevation from a curve?

Is there any function/lisp I can use to straighten out a curved polyline with specific points (eg nodes) on it which keeps the points the same distance from the start of the polyline/arc?  Not sure if this is clear but for example if a node is on a 3m arc, 2m arc length from one end I would use function to get a 3m straight line with a node 2m from the end.  Simple enough to do with one or two nodes but a pain with 50 or so.
