Creating a Roll Plan

I was asked my my company to plot a long "roll plan" to put up on the wall for a reference.  The project is 1.2 miles long and we want to plot the entire proposed roadway on a sheet 24" x 10'..maybe 15'.  I am familiar with seting up normal paper sized but this is something I am not familiar with doing.

A problem I think we will run into is that on this 1.2 mile proposed roadway, there is a 35 degree corner and the roadway changes direction.  Can what I am trying to do still be achieved?  If so, how?

Draw it in AutoCAD actual size.

Draw a rectangle with height equal to your paper roll width (which is fixed at 24") and length equal to an estimate of what you think the length will need to be to fit the scaled-down print of your plan (just guess initially).

Clearly, you will have to scale up this rectangle so that the height "covers" the height (short axis) of your plan. Take a quick distance measurement across the short axis of your plan and scale up the entire rectangle according to the ratio, but keep track of the actual scale you use to make it fit.

Once you get it to fit across the short axis, stretch the long axis (longer or shorter, based on how good your guess was) to fit around the length of the plan.  Because you have a bend, you are probably going to have to plot this roll plan in two pieces, so make it fit to where the bend occurs.

Once you get it to fit, scale the stretched rectangle back down based on the amount you had scaled it up before.  Measure the length and that will be (roughly) the custom page size you will have to put into your plotter PC3 setup to print.  (And hopefully it won't be longer than the length of a roll!)

Does that answer the question?  If not, please be more specific about what part(s) you need help with.

the way I 've always done it is create a NEW paper size  (ie  24" x 96")

Open your drawing.........start the plot command........select the plotter you'll be using...slect  Properties.

Under "Custom Properties"  Slelect: "Access Custom Properite"   then select  "CUSTOM"  Create a new paper size ie 24"x96" (Or whatever size firt your wall)

Select OK.. it will ask you if you want to save this for one time use or save to you (File) select file and it will be ther the next time you want to use that paper size.

You will then need to "Window" the area of the drawing that you want to print. (Select "Fit to paper" and "Center Plot" (check mark these)

Hope this helps

This is essentailly the process I have used in the past when I needed to do this. Make sure you set up the custom paper size in the printer settings first. It won't matter what you do in CAD until the printer is set. If somebody else wants to use your set up they will have to set up their printer too. If yo uare on a server maybe your IT people can help push that out to other users unless you will be the only one doing this. I have found that if I need to do it then somebody else will eventually need it too.
