Creating a new part by modifying an xref.

I'm trying to create a new part by modifying an xref that is already in the design.  Essentially, I just want to do a "make from".  This is what I done so far.  I created a new drawing, inserted my xref and saved as the new part. It looks like if I open that new part and try to modify it, Acad seems to be resorting back to the original xref to modify.  Am I asking too much?>

Are you perhaps just needing to change the VISRETAIN variable setting in your new file?

Which command did you use?  Insert or Xref?

Perhaps you need to actually make a copy of the xref dwg and attach that into your new dwg so that any changes made to the copy does not impact the original xref.
