Hello guys,

I'm looking for a way to convert either a .png or .jpeg file to the file types .stp and .stl Is there a free way to do this for at least 4 files?

Thank you for any guidance! -Alex

Hello alxdott,

The problem you described isn't just a matter of conversion.

The .jpeg and .png are raster formats and you wish to export data that is exclusive to vector graphics. If that would be a 2D object, You'd have to either re-draw the objects or trace them using any available "Raster to Vector" tool.

But considering you want to obtain an .stl / .stp file I assume, that this would be a 3D object for 3D printing. Therefore it's important to note, that If the object you have in .jpeg format is 3D object, then you cannot retrieve such data by any means other than drawing this object using any vector graphic software.

If you draw the object in AutoCAD, the conversion is pretty simple. You just use the EXPORT command and choose the *.stl extension as your desired export file extension.

Hi @Anonymous,

I see that you are visiting as a new member. Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

Did you understand the explanation posted by @swieciakpawel?  It is sound.  To get this date into a 3D format you are going to need some vector information.

Hi @Anonymous,

I am checking back to see if you still need help on this issue. Have you tried creating vector information from your image file(s)?

You want to convert a static 2d picture into a 3d object? What movie did that come from 🙂

Sorry my friend, this world isn't that advanced yet, not with one single picture especially.

Hi, you can use websites like:

http://www.embossify.com/ - jpg to stl, but only black and white images work well, i would also recomend useing simple shapes.

Simplify3D has such a feature.  It can take a .jpg file and convert it into an .stl.
