2008 was one of the great versions, because it introduced annotation objects and tons of 2D annotation tools and enhancements - and was the last of the "old style" GUIs. 2009 introduced the Ribbon. Enough said on THAT topic.
There have been numerous improvements since then. The latest can insert Navisworks files and point clouds, can import and convert Vectorized PDF files into DWG objects, and can create 2D parametric objects. That's only the tip of the iceberg!
