Changing Default File Name from Drawing#.dwg to a custom name

Previously my team was using a saved .dwg file as a template and just copying this file from a template folder and into a project folder.
I tried converting this .dwg file into a template file but now when we use the template file to open a drawing we always have to rename it from Drawing#.dwg to the naming convention we use for all our projects.

Its a relatively small step but I am wondering if there is a work around so that when I open my unique template the drawing name comes in as a custom default?

Thank you for any help.

AutoCAD always names a new drawing "DrawingX.dwg".

Then the first time you save it, you will be prompted for the file name.

If you were using Sheet Set Manager, the process is a bit different in that you name the file before you open it.

I'm trying to avoid having to type in a long cumbersome file name (with dates and revisions #'s and project names) from scratch.

Do you have Vault Professional?  If so, you can use the 'automatic file naming' application.
