Cannot find images with Attach

There are three of us in this office using Acad 2018.  Previously I was able to attach jpegs and other image formats using Insert|Attach.  This morning, my coworkers approached me to see if I was having trouble importing PDFs.  They would select the pdf but it would not appear in the drawing and there was no error message.  I told them I usually don't import pdfs but attach jpegs instead.  We attempted to do so on their computers but when the open file dialogue opened it had a filter hard set to point cloud files so you couldn't see or select any other file type.  I demonstrated my usual method of using Insert|Attach and it worked fine.  Then I tried what they were trying to do: Insert|Import|Import PDF.  As in their case, the PDF would not appear.  Then I tried going back to my Insert|Attach method and discovered that something changed and now I also can only select point cloud files from the Insert|Attach dialogue.  I have tried it several times doing the same method Insert|Attach and it seems to work intermittently, and the rest of the time shows the point cloud file dialogue.

Hi @Anonymous,

What version of AutoCAD are each of you using?

In 2017 or newer, you can use the PDFImport command to insert a vector-based PDF as vector geometry.

IMAGEATTACH should allow you to attach other image files.

In addition, through the External Reference Manger, you can also attach files.

If these aren't working for you can you walk me through your exact steps (along with some screen captures)?

John, as I said in the original post, we are using Autocad 2018 and we are using the Import command as you suggested.  But, there seems to be a bug that causes the Open File dialogue to filter out all files except point cloud project (RCP) files.  In my original post I included a screenshot showing the dialogue box that opens when I use the import command.  This is not a problem with not knowing how to import or attach images, I've been using Autocad since 1989 by the way.  This is a bug and I am trying to let someone at Autocad know, and maybe see if there's a fix for it on the way.

Thanks.

Hi @Anonymous,

I wanted to make sure that you had applied all the updates to your AutoCAD 2018.  Please check to see that it is current through your Autodesk Desktop App of through your account page.

You image unfortunately, doesn't tell me very much. If you drop the down arrow at the Files of Type field what other choices are there?  I can see from the dialog window title too that you selected to attach a point file and not an image.

Please try typing in the commands I provided to see if that allows you to attach images. If so, then we need to verify that the icons you are selecting are the correct ones and that they are working properly.

Hi @Anonymous,

I saw that you made another post but it appears to have been grabbed by the SPAM filter for some reason.

The most current version should be 2018.1.2. To find this in your account page, select All Products and Services. Then in the right hand pane, select your AutoCAD 2018.  Now, just below the downloads you will see Updates & Add-Ons. There you should be able to find the update.

Did you try the commands that I provided?

Make sure that the attach icon from the Ribbon is this one (Nt the Point CLoud attach.

Is anyone just typing the command names in the commandline then hitting <enter> as needed to see if they work of got substituted by an add-in? Put a period in front of the name

.PDFATTACH

.PDFIMPORT

.IMAGEATTACH

and so on.

I agree @pendean, it would be good to find out if the functionality works at all and the problem lies with a messed up command sequence in the ribbon command links.

Another quick check on functionality would be for the OP to simply CTRL+C a JPEG file (or other image file) from a windows folder and CTRL+V into an ACAD drawing.  This should step through the traditional process of placing, scaling, and rotating the image.  He would end up with this on the XREF list if all goes well.

Also, for an OLE insert check...

Open an image in MSPaint, select all or part of the image, CTRL+C, go to ACAD and CTRL+V.  The selection should drop into ACAD as an OLE with no issues.

If any problems happen with those processes then surely he has problems functionally and not just with the command link sequence.

John, no idea here why the spam filter would grab my message.  Nor any idea why when looking at the accounts page it doesn't show anything but storage, as if my login is not associated with the account or something.  Both of those would seem like trivial problems to resolve but finding support from Autodesk to resolve them seems like another wild goose chase at this point.

The Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V method works, and so did the line commands.  I used to abhor all of the toolbars and ribbons, but gave in over recent years.  Should have maintained my resistance lol.

Thanks.

I hope you took a look at your version as John suggested?  If you are behind then maybe the update would fix the issue.
