CAD freezes when switching to layout (elevation banding and big surfaces)

CAD freezes on my laptop when switching to layout tab when trying to display large topo surface and/or showing cut/fill elevation banding. I am trying to determine what is the weak link and cannot.  Model space is not an issue. Please help. Latest dwg is only 4 MB. I am willing to upgrade the computer but cannot determine what is the cause or weak aspect of my setup.

My guess is this is a RAM issue but my IT skills and knowledge are VERY low.

Thank you.

Did you realize you posted this in Community Feedback? This is not a technical forum.

As to your issue, it's not a lack of RAM, it's just an unsolved bug. How are you switching to the layout tab? By clicking the layout tab? Try running the -layout command and switching that way. Any different?

Autodesk's technical article on this isn't much help, as they blame it (in some cases, rightly) on your drawing or drivers, or .NET, etc. etc. Here is another one specific to Civil 3D. and turning LEVELOFDETAIL OFF is a good idea in all situations, that should never be enabled IMO.

Open a support ticket with Autodesk, and good luck.

Thank you - I did realize the wrong place to post but couldnt fint the right one. I appreciate your feedback - at least I know it's not something simple.

I should mention that when I turn the surfaces to "no display" then I can switch to the tab. Yes, I typically click the layout tab instead of "-layout" so I am excited to try that.
