Blocks not updating(redefining) from source file through the tool palette

Hi,

I have 1 central drawing file that contains all my blocks (hundreds of them).  I created tool palettes  for the purpose of organising and placing of these blocks for myself and my team.

However, If if I amend a block in the source file, and saving it. it still does not update in the tool palette even after using the redefine command?

It doesn't seem to be a problem for any new blocks I create. But doesn't seem to work for the other blocks that I created a few months back?

Can anyone see what the issue could be here?

kind regards

Matt

Is it just the tool icons that don't update, or the inserted block?

How do you redefine?

Do the updates that don't update involve changes to ATTRIBUTES, by chance? If so, then ATTSYNC will resolve this.

If none of these is the issue, then what happens if you remove the tool from the palette and then create it again?

Hi dmfrazier,

Thanks for reply. It's the inserted block. I right click on it in the tool palette and click redefine. But it does not update. I have some blocks with and some without ATTRIBUTES. But the problem seems to affect both.

However I just tried what you said about deleting if from my toolpalette and reinserting it which seemed to have done the trick!

Thanks for your help

Are you aware that content already in a DWG file with the same name do not automatically get replaced like that in AutoCAD without a little more effort? It's a program rule so to speak.

RENAME the old block as a test and bring in the newly defined one: is that the replacement you want by chance?

Just curious... what version of AutoCAD are you running?

2022. I had created most the blocks in 2021 version, so I was wondering if that had anything to do with it?

I created some new blocks for testing earlier on today and they updated perfectly when using the "redefine" option. But anything I'd done previously ( a few months back) would not update??

"...anything I'd done previously ( a few months back) would not update..."

That is hard to understand.

There were changes to block-related commands in 2021, but I don't know if further changes were made in 2022 that might explain the behavior. It seems that something is going on "under the covers" that is different from past releases.

In any case, it looks like the whole thing can be remedied (eventually) by deleting and re-creating the palette tools. (Help in 2021 actually describes this as an alternative to the redefine option.)

Yes, a bit of a strange one. And I always like to know the reasons why. But your advice solves my problem so I'm happy!

Thanks again for your help. Much appreciated!

Show us: provide us with TWO dwg files, one with the problem block in it, the other with the block working perfectly as you have changed it.
