Best Laptop for AutoCAD for Student?

I am starting in school for draft and design and I will be working with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and something else called Catia and I know my 2013 or 15 MacBook Pro doesn’t have the memory for it and possibly the ram for it. So I am wondering on what y’all use and what works. Not from some article on the inter web but from actual people who use it. Do I need a workstation or would a newer more powerful MacBook work? Can I use a Surface Pro 4 or is that a no no? Any assistance would be very much thanked and appreciated for!!

Hi,

Well, please let us know what you are planing to do with AutoCAD.

It's a difference if you draw simple 2D schematics or full 3D with huge complex models.

For AutoCAD, you will need a good laptop with minimum Core i7 processor, dedicated graphics card with 4GB VRAM, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD and a FHD display. If you are going to store more, you can even go for 512GB or 1TB SSD. I am not recommending HDD as SSD will deliver more speed.

Now, some of the options you can go with are, New Dell XPS 15 7590 (if you want portable one), Razer Blade 15, MSI PS42 and other gaming laptops from ASUS or MSI.

Hi,

besides of the thread is already a year old, but because there might be some future readers ...

>> minimum Core i7 processor,

Why not i5? It has just less cores than i7, as AutoCAD is a single-thread application (only very few functions are working in multi-threaded mode) it's not relevant how many cores a processor has, it's more important the CPU clock rate it is working with, the higher the frequency the better.
