Automating point placment

I have a drawing of several large  buildings and need to place points off of every corner “ 4 foot offset” Is there a way to some what automate this? It is very time consuming on a large commercial building to do it point at a time by hand. Thanks

In AutoCad probably not without using a lisp program.  In Civil3D you can if you have access to the program.

I found a lisp routine from Alan J. Thompson. that might do the trick.  You would draw polyline around the bldg and use the cvt10.lisp routine to place the block at your vertices.

Can you elaborate? What is the purpose of the points? You have many large buildings, so many it is tedious to place them individually 4' offset from the corners. It's hard  to imagine what, or why,  you are trying to accomplish.

I am assuming not all of the buildings have square or rectangular footprints, some might be L-shaped while others may have obtuse angles at the corners. And if they are large buildings then they are more than one-story, correct? Are you placing the points 4' away from the corners and on the ground or are they suspended in air near the roof, perhaps 120' above the sidewalk? 

There may be several ways to achieve your goal and placing points either manually or by lisp may not be one of them.

We need them to run string lines for foundations, pilings and bold patterns for steel uprights.  Also to place the building on the ground in the proper place by aligning our points with the surveyors points.

If you have surveyed points from a surveyor, then you should use the survey itself, not your drawing, to locate those stakes.

Sure your points may be 4' offset from your drawing and sure, this is the way you've been told by the forum to draw those points, but that doesn't mean the drawing  or the staked locations are correct. Your field crew may interpret the drawing differently from what you intended or your drawing may not comply with the surveyor's stake locations. Either way, incorrectly located stakes opens the door to liability  for you, your boss, your firm and the general contractor. 

Mention both the surveyor's points and the offset points to the general contractor and see which he prefers.

Even with Civil 3D, no, I can't think of any way to automatically create those 4-ft offset points. But I've done quite a bit of footing and building staking, and every data collector I ever used has easy ways to stake these offsets "on the fly".
