AutoCAD text input fields instantly lose focus and return to command line

I am experiencing a persistent issue where any text input field in AutoCAD immediately loses focus and kicks me back to the command line. This affects all versions I’ve tested (AutoCAD 2025 and 2026).

Examples :

  • Renaming layers in the Layer Properties Manager

  • Typing dimensions at the cursor bar (Dynamic Input or Command Line)

  • Entering filenames in Save As

  • Highlighting objects (selection does not stay active)

  • Dropdown menus (they collapse after a few seconds)

Sounds like you may have an app running in the background that might be interrupting your mouse strokes. Have you tried replacing your mouse or keyboard?  Perhaps create a new Windows login with local admin rights then sign into using that profile to see if the problem still occurs?

I have tried both and neither work. I have also tried to reinstall windows with no success. Do you think it could be a bad keyboard driver?

if you’re just using a regular keyboard and mouse then that should not be an issue
If you’re running win 11 try disabling Snap layouts to see if that makes a difference

As another test disable all startup items in windows. Also try running AutoCAD in safemode

See if this makes a difference

At command prompt enter:
GFXDX12
0
Thats a zero, close & restart AutoCAD
If still no good, at command prompt enter:
GRAPHICSCONFIG
Select another option under 2D Display Settings
If still no good, at command prompt enter:
GRAPHICSCONFIG
Disable Hardware Acceleration

So this problem only occurs inside AutoCAD but no other program?

If you're using a laptop, have you tried plugging the power adapter in while running the program?

Are you adventurous enough to try AutoCAD 2023 or 2024?

yes rhino, adobe, and browsers work fine. I am using a laptop and have tried it both plugged in and unplugged. I also tried autocad 2025, but the same issue was there. Autocad worked fine until sometime around april, and then this problem showed up

since you're using a laptop, have you tried plugging in a separate keyboard or mouse and disabling the touchpad on the laptop?

well, I've exhausted all my ideas. perhaps if you have another computer I would try installing autocad and running it on there.

I have the exact same issue — whenever I try to create a new layer and name it (for example, “little layer”), I type “lit,” but the rest of the name (“tle layer”) ends up appearing in the command line instead. Please share if you find any solution.

@austinvu @mynamebbd No one in our offices is seeing anything like that. Here are the ways to open a support case with Autodesk if you are on subscription to seek out Autodesk Support's help:

I am a student, so I cannot ask for Autodesk chat support.
