Just happen to want to get AutoCAD R14 running again. Downloaded Oracle VirtualBox, loaded my Windows XP and my AutoCAD R14 on my new Windows 7 machine and it works like a charm.
I also had some burning answers for people who asked in the past where no real solution existed so here we go..
AutoCAD R14 had something called TRACE which worked just like line except it asks you for a width. Works very much like the current lineweight command, I don't know if this command exists in the current AutoCAD but most likely it does. You could also use pedit to edit selected lines to change their width.
Sorry but
The answer of: Are there "lineweights" available: NO, you can controle lineweights only by using the pen setting (plot).
TRACE is a command who create TRACEs, i prefer to not use traces because there are no ootb convert functions(explode will not work for trace objects),
much better are POLYLINEs for this.
(PS: Yes, like othe old stuff too, trace objects are also valid in the current version and trace command
is also available, but hidden - Need to start explizit as orignal command with a point in front of the commandname: .TRACE)
How to draw in AutoCAD (R14 or older) with lineweights: Inside cad: Normaly not, this started with version&format 2000,
but if needed, try POLYLINE and differently width.

In R14 if one explodes a polyline, the line width reverts to 0 where the center width would be.
The command width is only available under pedit.
Interesting to add a "." in front of the TRACE command in the newer versions. I wonder if that's a common attribute? That is for old commands to use the "." to activate them.
No and no
If you explode a polyline, it isnt longer a polyline, it explode to lines and arcs!
Lines and Arc = no width property available
but for polylines.
Not only in pedit, also by creating.
The period means: run the original command, the original defind command in the <current version>, so it means in your running version.
It doesn't mean 'for obsolet commands'!
"Why?" Because i can undefine or re-define commands, but the original command stay in the background.
For example: i redefine the LINE command to create circles - stupid but possible,
LINE will command circles then, but .LINE will start the original command and will create a line.
In newer versions Autodesk undefined the TRACE command, so it's hidden for most of users (well in my eyes).
