AutoCAD on Linux

Anonymous

Dear AutoCAD forum,
we try to find a way to install AutoCAD under Linux in our enterprise. The best known possibility to install Windows porgramms in Linux seems to be Wine.
We have tried out different versions of Wine as well as from AutoCAD, however, we always had the problem that during the installation process the setup window has always shut right in the middle, although the installation was not finished yet, or that the setup has got stuck with about one third.
Did somebody already have the same problem and if so has somebody solved it?

Yours sincerely

With the planned Windows 12 forced subscription that's coming, many companies are going to drop Windows permanently. I'd suggest that AutoDESK start on porting this ASAP.

You speak truth! With Microsoft overcomplicating themselves into Oblivion,
I see the irony in using Open source Code Being wrapped up to an internal
registry and then emulated on an OS using the best operating system on the
planet. I mean the sheer speed of the Linux operating system is amazing, as
for security goes there are none more secure than Linux. I don't think
Autodesk understands the Financial implications of releasing such A
beautiful product. It's incredibly frustrating with map 3D.

AutoCAD and it verticals is not supported on Linux.

Please see the system requirement for all tested and supported platforms for AutoCAD.

We know. THAT is what we are talking about.

THAT is our big complain!

We WANT it to come to the - now quite rapidly rising OS - Linux.

Windows is in a more & more declining stage.

Game developers has realised this. Valve/ Steam has realised this.

Games are often running faster on Linux than Windows.

More companies than ever are switching to Linux.

Linux are more used on servers than Windows.

'No-one' wants Windows 11.

'No-one' asks for a Windows 12.

Linux is the future.

Hi,

>> Game developers has realised this. Valve/ Steam has realised this.

AutoCAD is not a game.

>> Linux are more used on servers than Windows.

AutoCAD is not an application for servers. Users have their desktop/laptop for CAD-work (and don't want to take servers with them when working e.g. off-site).

>> now quite rapidly rising OS - Linux.

In the last 5 years from about 1.5% to 4% ... wait about another 5 years and let us then compare the numbers again.

>> 'No-one' wants Windows 11.

Describe the definition of "no-one" ... without telling us "only Linux users don't want Windows"

>> Linux is the future.

May be, but not for the near future as desktop os. Not as long as charts like this (independet of who provided the chart for market share for desktop os) is showing Windows by far as no 1 and Linux not even close to get place 2

@leejlanham Curious why you want to use a 40yo program in Linux when there are CAD programs designed for it that are more modern and can read DWG file?

Seems very limiting on your part.

Well that is good insight as I am 67 years old and do not do a lot of
software research.
What CAD dwg reader software do you think is best for Linux?
To make sure I understand, I can take an AutoCAD dwg and open it in Linux
using something like Chief Architect (another ancient thing)....but what do
you suggest?

BricsCAD is similar to AutoCAD, and runs on Linux.

AutoCad 2018 (full)

Thank you. I will give it a look.

Problem is most Engineers and Architects still use AutoCAD or Revit.
Revit has weak points when there are material transitions and then the
user often switches to AutoCAD to define details....or so I have been
told...maybe by another ill-informed source.

Well, that's more like REVIT and it only imports/exports DWG files, you want programs that can use DWG all the time.

You are going to find and use different CAD programs that can handle DWG files natively: BricsCAD and DRAFTSIGHT are two professional grade alternates you can explore.

If you need free for whatever reason, features are low but you can explore and try QCAD, FreeCAD, GSTAR and LibreCAD.

Freecad  runs on LINUX. A long time ago IBM thought that Microshaft was small potatoes. Autodesk would be wise not to fall into that same trap. One million Windows 11 Users, everyone of them is upset with Microshaft on this abortion.

I have enjoyed the banter in this discussion...

I use Windows at the office and both Windows and Linux on some personal devices, so I think I am somewhat unbiased.  I believe the link below may be the best answer, and I'll expand on why I think that..

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-forum/autocad-on-linux/td-p/7927396/page/2#M183617

I am of the belief that AutoDESK is sort of "kicking the can down the road" in regards to AutoCAD on Linux.  I think in the not-to-distant future, AutoCAD will cease to exist as a desktop application and only be a web app.  Why spend the devo time and $$$ to port the desktop version to a new OS if you plan to push the web app in it's place.  Over the years, the AutoCAD Web app has gotten better with font and lisp support, x-refs etc.  They may be planning to develop it to the point where they expect the non-Revit users to be able to do all they need to in the web app.  At that point, the desktop version may go away...

Of course, I could be completely wrong about all this too.  Flame away if you feel the need.

Pete

Yes I see your points and the $ubcription method is a rip-off and costs me
$260/month as a sole proprietor. My skill is in the Design Phase and then
the CD Phase is handed off to the Revit Users. The Owner/Manager of the A&E
Design/Drafting Firm can use anything that makes a PDF or DWF for my Final
Design to be redrawn by his Revit Users.

So, I will research and trash the Autodesk 'Subscription'.

I am of the same opinion: I've seen full desktop AutoCAD run in a Browser via FRAME and the only hiccup was the speed of the demonstrator's internet connection to that site.
That future is closer than we think: all we will need are dumb terminals.
