AutoCad is very slow on massive PC

Hello Forum,

this is my first post. Never had problems with Autocad which i couldn´t find on the internet, but now the moment has come. I own a very powerful PC (I7-6700k- Gigabyte Z170X TH Mainboard - 16gb Ram - Nvidia Gtx660 - DELL 2K Display) but the only weak point of it, is the HDD which is a Samsung ST250DM001 HD253GJ, which is kind of ****ty i think. Still my Autocad is extremly slow and i can´t work like this. it´s a small drawing (look at photo)

I have absolutley no idea what to do (tried to turn off hardware acc.).

Maybe it´s time for a ssd, but the hdd cant be the problem right?

Please help me 🙂

Thank you very much and greetings,

Erwin Klinglhuber

Where is the slowness?  Pan/zoom?  Drawing?  Open?  Save?

What's the background - line work, or referenced image/PDF?

What happens if you switch visual style to 2D wireframe?

A few other suggestions:

Try to open the same drawing on another computer and see how the performance is.  If the performance is the same (it's likely a drawing related issue) however if the performance is good on another machine (it's likely a workstation issue) - Process of Elimination, something to check anyway.

Open a different drawing on your machine, is the performance still slow?

Even though the drawing appears small, there may be other things going on (DGN Issues, other 'invisible' content that is cluttering up the drawings). Try running Audit/Purge, etc. Are there any references to other servers? Reference files (XRefs) can also have a bunch of issues where they need to be cleaned up also.

Check your %TEMP% folder (Windows Explorer) as it can be bogged down with a TON of files that can cause system performance issues.

Hello

Welcome to the Autodesk / AutoCAD Forums !

01) Open your DWG (and XREFs if any ?) in RECOVER Mode

02) PURGE ALL your DWGs with ALL Purge Options enabled

03) SCALELISTEDIT <Enter> - Select ALL Scales (Except 1:1) and try to delete them ...

04) ReSave your DWGs and TEST ...

05) As your DWG seems to be 3D, please try with 2D/3D Wireframe Display Style ?

06) Your PC is : I7-6700k- Gigabyte Z170X TH Mainboard - 16 Gb Ram - Nvidia Gtx 660

-- OK it's a GOOD PC but which version of ACAD AND which version of Windows ??

07) Which Service Pack & Hotfix have been installed on your ACAD ??

08) If ACAD 2016 or + , please try to run with  HQGEOM = 0

If ACAD 2015 or + , run with  LINEFADING  &  LINESMOOTHING  = Disabled

09) Ctrl W - Please disable Cyclic Selection

10) UCSDETECT = 0

11) Disable Transparency

12) ROLLOVERTIPS = 0

13) QPMODE = 0

Happy WE, Regards, Patrice

Hi!

The Slowness is in Pan/zoom, also drawing.  Everything in the drwaing is affected. In 2D wireframe there´s no problem if I´m on top view.

I am using Windows 10 Pro (Version: 1709 / Build: 16299.64) and Autocad 2018 (all updates are installed)

I cleaned the drawing as you told me to, but it is still very laggy. I tried an example drawing from autocad which was not as laggy as my own dwg.

Thank you all very much for the replies and for the interest in solving other peoples problems. Thanks for your time i definitely appreciate what you re doing for me 🙂

Greetings, Erwin

PS: The settings from the Autocad Graphics are attached as a text file!

Hello from France

THANKS for the Graphic & PC Infos, everything seems OK !

With the 3D Screen Capture from your message of 2017-11-24 03:56 PM, your DWG seems very SMALL / LIGHT !!

*** 1 *** Have you the same problem with other 3D Display Styles :  3D GrayScale or 3D X-Ray or 3D with Hidden Lines/Faces removed or 3D Standard Colors or etc ?  ...  NOT with 3D Realistic Style !

*** 2 *** Please which value for these 3 System variables :  DRAGMODE, DRAGP1, DRAGP2 ??

Below "normal" values ...

Commande: DRAGMODE
Entrez une nouvelle valeur pour DRAGMODE <2>:
Commande: DRAGP1
Entrez une nouvelle valeur pour DRAGP1 <5000>:
Commande: DRAGP2
Entrez une nouvelle valeur pour DRAGP2 <10>:

*** 3 *** Please can you share with us your "special" 3D DWG ??

Regards, Patrice

Hi,

Yes i do have the same problem with other 3D Styles! And the DWG  is indeed very small. Even my Tablet with Autocad can work with it flawless.

Dragmode = 2

Dragp1=5000

Dragp2=10

DWG is attached!

Thanks so far!

If any information needed just tell me!

Greetings, Erwin

Working very smooth over here.

Did you install the latest drivers of your display adaptor?

Or try to uncheck graphics acceleration in 3dconfig.

Hi,

same for me, your drawing works well on my side.

>> gtx660

How old is that workstation, because that graphic card is not the newest one.

Can you please start command _GRAPHICSCONFIG and show us the screenshot from that dialog.

Also please start _ABOUT and again, show us a screenshot from that window.

What you also might try is to copy your geometry into a new drawing and more close to 0,0,0 ... does the geometry in the new drawing work then better?

Hello Alfred,

thank you for your answer! I tried to copy it over to a acad3D preset and it worked. Its very smooth now. I hope it stays the same cause in the sample dwg from autocad, it was also a little bit laggy.

Maybe the problem was that I started with an 2D file and then went over to 3D. Never did that before so I´m wondering if it is a problem for autocad to do so.

But thanks a lot for all the help from you guys!

Just in case, the screenshots are attached!

Greetings,

Erwin Klinglhuber
