AutoCAD freezes when clicking on one of the columns for a layer in Layer Properties and can only come out of it when I press the ESC key

Whenever I go into Layer Properties to change the color, linetype or lineweight, AutoCAD freezes and won't let me click on anything unless I press the ESC key in which AutoCAD unfreezes. In other words, I cannot edit the properties of a layer in Layer Properties without AutoCAD locking me out and not letting me click on anything.

Hi @Anonymous 

The layer properties (layer manager) palette is stuck off-screen, that's why you are not able to see that. Try connecting an external monitor if you have and see if you can see the palettes. If not here is an article on how to reset the palette locations🙂

Several questions:

Windows version and AutoCad version, and are both fully up to date?

PC Specs?

Does this happen in all files, or just certain files?

Did it just start, or has it always done this?

If only certain files, can you post one?

It seems to be an offscreen problem, but not for the layerproperties palette like vinodkl wrote,

only for COLOR dialog for color,

or Linetype dialog for linetypes aso.

Click in your column as you did,

then follow these steps:

Press [ALT]+[SPACE]

I tried exactly what you said and it works when moving other popup displays, but still doesn't work for color, linetype, lineweight. All it shows is the 4 arrow cursor indicating that it is moving something but nothing is attached to that cursor.

The thing that is strange is that this only started recently. I didn't change anything on my computer or in AutoCAD and it just stopped working all of a sudden. I was actually working on a drawing right before I noticed the problem and everything was working fine then all of a sudden it just stopped.

can you see a pop up menu? (test it with another dialog like RENAME, then you see what i mean

if not:

After [ALT]+[SPACE] and [M]

Where is the cursor now? Same place, middle of acad program window? Nowhere?

minimize all other  programs

Are you using Autocad in full screen mode?

Try it again while the acad window is not full screen:

Please resize Autocad window to only the half left side of your monitor

Same problem?

Are you using more than one monitor?

forget: if you have multiple monitors try the other one (slide AutoCAD onto the other monitor)

At last: Now, if Autocad is not "freezed" (it isn't freezed, it works, only you can not see the dialog as you should)

What happens if you send the command: _.COLOR ? (or _.linetype)

If the same problem appears, there is a problem with your profile or with your installation (with the content of

some supportpaths.

1a. Switch the profile, OPTIONS/Profile, set another as current

or

1b. Start AutoCAD with a new profile [Win]+[R]

"C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD <your version>\acad.exe" /product ACAD /p "TEST"

2. Try the windows- REPAIR INSTALL [WIN]+[R]

Thank you for all the help. I was able to reset AutoCAD to all of it's default settings and I can open AutoCAD and a drawing and I am able to successfully edit the color, linetype, etc. but only for about 1 minutes. After that one minute, it goes back to how it was before where I can't edit things in the Layer Properties. Let me know if this helps to find an answer or if you think my AutoCAD just wants to take a break after a minute of working.

This happens for every new AutoCAD instance?

Looks like a memory and/or graphic problem. I can not tell more about these things,

but it could help to find a solution.

Play with your graphic settings

In Acad you can set Hardware Acceleration ON or OFF, but i think that hast nothing to do with dialogs..

In Windows: DPI scaling 100% Resolution to FHD for a test.

Set another graphic card current if available or try another driver.

What we knowing: The program works.

like to know if the problem is present:

Start COLOR command and click exactly in the middle of the screen <ENTER>.

Or easier: Start COLOR<enter>30<enter>

Check out your current color (CECOLOR),

is is 30? Then the invisible dialog works... i am sure it does 🙂
