Autocad drawing can't be opened on word

Hi experts,

I use autocad 2021(win 10), but my co-worker uses 2013(win 10) or 2014(win 7) cad. Therefore, converting 2021 to 2010 version.

And it's ok to open on 2013 or 2014 Autocad, but if pasting the drawing on word or ppt, showing the mistake.

i also use trueview to convert, but it still can't

Is there any problem to solve it ? Or it may be a WORD problem? (word version is 2016)

thanks!!!

Hi,

>> but if pasting the drawing on word or ppt

Neither MS-Word nor Powerpoint should be used to transfer data. You can use copy & paste to create copy of your geometry into MS-Word (or other applications), but don't assume that then using a double-click to this content works in the same way as opening the dwg-file itself.

If you want to transfer data, then transfer the dwg-file itself.

What is the goal of pasting a dg into word or powerpoint?  are you trying to display a 'picture' of the drawing in the document  or slideshow?  or sending an editable copy of the DWG?  If the latter, that's something that neither AutoCAD nor OLE were designed to do.

If the former, there are better ways to get there, from doing a screen capture, to plotting to an image file, creating a PDF and embedding that, or using WMF files to create a snapshot of the drawing display.

That's an exceptionally odd method you use: you only need to send them a DWG file, and you need to use DWGCONVERT command to properly knock down the version of DWG for your recipients to eliminate that error message. That's how it is done.

hi JGerth

Because the CAD drawing file is pasted into Word to facilitate the drawing management and editing and modification by others, there is no need to find the corresponding CAD file to avoid the problem of incomplete modification.

thanks

Hi,

Sorry, this is the worst way to transfer dwg-data (and try to use this as a replacement for document management).

  • You have issues with dwg-versions ... this is the limitation you have reached now(!)
  • you have issues with referenced dwg/image/PDF/... files
  • you have issues with missing CTB/STB/PC3/SHX/TTF/DXE... files
  • ...and a lot more of reasons

OLE can be used to show content in different applications like show content of the modelspace in other applications, but again, using OLE embedding to save files is a very critical way ... and sometimes a killer of data content (possibility to lose your data).

Hi

i know this is a problem of process, and this will be changed it.

but is there maybe a relation on MS OFFICE(2016) or Autocad(2013、2014)?

or as you said, it's a problem of OLE?

thanks

Hi,

>> but is there maybe a relation on MS OFFICE(2016)

>> or Autocad(2013、2014)?

No relation to office version. The OLE-object you embedd into MS-Word (or other applications) knows either the type of the object (e.g. "Image") or the type of application to open the file (e.g. "AutoCAD.Application").

As Images like JPG or TIFF are not related to specific versions or programs it's easier to get this working on other computers with different installation of image editing applications.

For object types like AutoCAD it always uses the format of your AutoCAD application to make sure all geometry entities can be imported when you try to open the CAD-OLE-object again for editing.

>> or as you said, it's a problem of OLE?

It is not a problem of how OLE works in general, the issue you have is that objects you copied from AutoCAD 2018 (or newer) to MS-Word can not be opened in AutoCAD 2017 and older, just because the OLE-object has a different type/signature for the application you need to open this embedded data.
