AutoCAD crashing intermittantly

I'm using AutoCAD 2015 64 bit on a Dell Latitude E6530.  It has Windows 7 Pro, an i5 processor with 10 GB of RAM, and an Nvidia NVS 5200M video card - also Intel HD Graphics 4000 card.  I have installed all AutoCAD updates, but I still get intermittent crashing of AutoCAD.  Everything I am working on is lost.  The program always restarts, but will simply crash for no apparent reason.  Is this because of the specs on my laptop?  I have scanned for viruses also and performed all Windows updates.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

Can you save the file before it crashes?

Is the saved file corrupt?

Hi @Anonymous,

I am sorry that you are having this problem. Are there any error messages when this occurs? Does anything show up in the Windows Event Logs?

I would check to make sure that your video drivers are current.  Also, if this happens consistently on one or more drawings can you attach a sample drawing so I can see if there is any corruption?

What are your typical file sizes?  Are you working in 2D or 3D?  Does it make a difference if the file is simple or complex?

No error when AutoCAD crashes.  The program simply disappears and I have to reopen it.  I had to turn off hardware acceleration to be able to manage files - the cursor would trail within a drawing - sometimes never going away unless I clicked on the screen.  These are basic DWG files under 1 MB - slightly more sometimes - that have been sent to me from others - not 3D.  Doesn't seem to matter what file I work with.  Pretty simple stuff, really.

Hi @Anonymous,

Which graphics card does AtuoCAD show that it is using? Is it possible to disable the Intel card, and then verify that the most current drivers are installed for the NVidia.

You can see the Card in use by looking at Graphics Performance.

Seems to be two drivers. Intel HD 4000 Graphics Driver, but Nvidia NVS 5200M is listed in AutoDesk. Am looking into a newer driver. Found one for the Intel driver at Dell. Will go directly to Nvidia for that one.

Hi @Anonymous,

I haven't seen an update from you on whether newer drivers were available and remedied the problem.

As a good practice, I recommend also running Audit and Purge on all drawings that come from outside.  That might help prevent some issues too.

Please update your post.

Following are the basic reasons and solutions behind why the autocad get crashes in window. Try to correct the following situations so that the application could run easily and smoothly on your PC:

  • Update your drivers.
  • Update to the latest video driver from your graphics card manufacturer.
  • If your system happens to have dual graphic cards, disable the Intel video or set AutoCAD to run with the high-performance card
  • Run diagnostic test.
  • turn off Aero by changing your desktop theme to Windows Basic.
  • Also change program settings

Here is Dell Latitude E6530 Manual that will help you most in resolving your issue.
