I've just started having trouble with AutoCAD 2022 crashing with fatal error when in paper space or attempting to print. Anybody got any ideas? It's been running lovely up to now.

Cheers

Hi @alan_skipper,

I am sorry to hear you are experiencing this. There are a number of reasons for a crash when printing, the extra information that it is also crashing when in paper space helps narrow it down a bit.

Often this is an out dated graphics driver, see How to update to the latest certified video driver

The following Autodesk Knowledge Network articles provide additional information:

AutoCAD crashes when plotting a drawing layout

AutoCAD crashes or freezes when saving, closing, or plotting a drawing

Sometimes AutoCAD just shuts down without warning.

Set GFXDX12 variable to 0 (that's a zero) then restart AutoCAD/LT2022: reverting to DirectX11 fixes the problem for most users.

Also ensure you have he 2022.0.1 update installed (requires a PC restart), PLUS turn off LINESMOOTHING and LINEFADING variables.

Still having issues? Turn off hardware acceleration altogether in AutoCAD2022.

How do I set the GFXDX12 variable? No command appears when I type GFXDX2 into the command line.

Problem solved!!!!

I had installed a copy of Capture One Express (photographic software) just before this problem started.

Uninstalled Capture One Express, now no problem.

I even tried installing previous versions of AutoCAD, they would not launch whilst Capture One Express was installed. Capture One was not running during all of this, bye the way.

In summary: there appears to be a conflict between Capture One Express and AutoCAD.

One for the Autodesk experts to ponder.

It looks like I'll have to install Capture One on a different PC.

Cheers all and good luck.

No need to change it anymore, everything is working fine after uninstalling Capture One.

AutoCAD crashes (freezes entire workstation) before Command Prompt appears.

Is it possible to set the GFXDX12 variable through the system registry?

We have uninstalled and reinstalled AutoCAD 2022 and applied all updates.

All Windows 10 updates are applied.

AutoCAD on this workstation had been working for nearly eight months.

Last Monday the frequent crashes/freezes began.

It is so much more frustrating when AutoCAD crashes/freezes and you have to restart the PC.

All other apps work.

@Anonymous There was an OS update over this last weekend. Did you try to find out what that was yet, anything else get updated with it, and if removing it/them helps?

AND... On that one PC, login as an all new never-been-on-there user with local admin rights then test it: still crashing?

I added the /nohardware startup switch and started AutoCAD.

I was able to get to a Command Prompt and change GFXDX12 to 0.

Exited AutoCAD, removed the startup switch, and then restarted AutoCAD.

Working for now. Hopefully crash/freeze issue is fixed.

Still peculiar that an AutoCAD crash would lockup the entire computer.

FYI, if you do want to try editing via System Registry, here is the path for AutoCAD 2022:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Autodesk\AutoCAD\R24.1\ACAD-5101\Variables\*GFXDX12

Hopefully this may be helpful to others.

Regards,

Jerry
