AutoCAD 2020 quite slow despite having suitable hardware

Hi there,

I am running AutoCAD 2020 on a system with an Intel Core i7-6700K processor, with 16 GB RAM and a GTX 1050Ti GPU, with 30GB of SSD space left for use.

Files that worked smoothly on AutoCAD 2019 now lag at every command. I have turned Hardware Acceleration off as well. Any ideas?

Hi,

>> Files that worked smoothly on AutoCAD 2019 now lag at every command

Does that mean only existing files (from 2019 or older), but not new files started with 2020?

Can you start command _DESKTOPANALYTICS, if that is checked/activated then disable it.

Other option: disconnect your workstation from network, does AutoCAD then work better?

Third option: start with a new Windows user account and see if AutoCAD shows then the same lag or not

And please let us know if you migrated your settings from previous versions of AutoCAD.

I had not migrated my settings from 2019-2020. As soon as I did, the files began working quicker.

To answer some of your questions: Yes, I haven't started fresh files on 2020 yet. The files were not being run from the network - I had to do this to check if the network was causing the lags.

Any ideas as to why that happened?

Is this a clean install, with no "migration of settings" from a previous install?

Log in to the PC as a different Windows user and try again. Same results?

Disconnect the ethernet cable and/or any WiFi connections. Same results?

Use Process Monitor to watch file/registry activity, that may help you find the bottleneck. Here is an overview of how to do that: Tracking down why that application is slow

Like I mentioned to Alfred, this was a clean install, but things started working at their original speeds as soon as I migrated settings from the earlier 2019 version

Hi,

That sounds very interesting, whenever we see some issues then in most cases these issues can be solved by NOT doing a migration (reset settings to default), but using migration and then it gets better is the first time I heard/read that.

>> Any ideas as to why that happened?

Well, if you did some customization (before you restored to a migrated version) it might be any of these migration steps, that can be a path (support paths, printer paths & pc3-files, ...) or loaded applications, permissions to some folders on the network, ... But sorry, I can't say "this one item has to be changed".

But at least, good you found a way to get it working! 😉

Ah, well.

It helps to know what was behind it all, in case something similar shows up again. When you mentioned 'migration', I realised it was the one thing I did not do (which I usually do) during updates. Thanks for that.

Hi Sujay, it turn off the _DESKTOPANALYTICS. back to normal speed,

I have migrated setting from 2019, also turned off the hardware acceleration. it was getting to the point where I hade to purge the blocks every 5-10 mins.

Hi,

I've been having similar problems with AutoCAD 2020 LT.  It worked well when it was first installed.  But after a few weeks of use, the program started to lag (spinning blue circle) after every command.  It got so bad that I went back to using the 2019 version until I found a fix.  Today I read in this thread a comment about how migrating settings from previous versions may cause problems.   When I installed 2020, I had migrated my Workspace settings from the 2019 version.  So today, I set the Workspace to  "Drafting & Annotation".  (this might be the default Workspace?) When I did that, it removed the migrated Workspaces.  It didn't solve the lag problem either.  So I once again migrated my 2019 Workspace into 2020.  After that, the command lag is gone.  The program is now working just fine.

Hope that helps....

I am replacing my computer in a couple of weeks, so I will have a fresh install, I have maybe 50 Pallettes :-(.

Have you had any Lag with the new insert block dialog. This slows it down "I usually turn this off." I also find if you purge the blocks several time every couple of hours it speeds it up.

I'm running an I7 with 32GB memory, with a AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series graphics Card "6 monitors". This is about 4 years old, time to replace. Going to replace with an I9 in the next couple of weeks,

Hi cj....

I didn't notice any connection between the new block insertion palette and the command lag.   My problem was getting the spinning blue wheel (lag) whenever I started and ended a command.  For example, when I'd type the move command (M) then selected an object to move (or selected the object then typed the command), I'd get the spinning blue wheel (lag) for a couple of seconds before it would allow the move. Then after the object was moved,  I'd get the spinning wheel (lag) again.  It happened on every command.  It was only a few seconds but enough to disrupt the work flow.  All I know is that after removing & then re-migrating my 2019 Workspace, the lag went away.

I like the new block insertion palette and purge in 2020 so I'm glad the software is back to working normally.  Good luck with your new computer.

Hi,

What have you tried from the above suggestions (and solutions)?

If nothing helped then please be more specific with what exactly is slow, opening AutoCAD, opening or saving a drawing, using object snap, select an object, in all drawings or just in one specific dwg-file, ...

The more info you give, the higher the chance to get good suggestions and hopefully solutions.

Having same lag issue with 2020,  appears to by primarily the move command, both the command and the click and drag of a base point.

I unchecked/disables _DESKTOPANALYTICS

I tried both the Default Mechanical and Structural Workspaces.

I disconnected from network .

Still all the same lag with Move, Rotate, also Move and Rotation Attributes with in blocks.

Hi,

So you have AutoCAD Mechanical, not just plain AutoCAD (Vanilla).

In that case it might make more sense to search/ask in the forum for AutoCAD Mechanical >>>there<<<.

I experienced exactly the same issues with delay on every command after installing 2020. I had already migrated my settings. How the issued was resolved was by Resetting my Autocad using the command on the pulldown under AutoCAD LT 2020 "Reset AutocadLT" and migrate my custom settings during the reset process. All appears fine now.

DTarch, CJ, and Irene,

I am concerned about your migration slowdown. If you start seeing it again (ie it only temporarily works to reset and migrate) can you send a performance feedback report using the PMTOGGLE command. Just if you start seeing the spinning wheel, run PMToggle, run a few commands where you get the spinning wheel, and then end the performance report (keep it minimal to reduce log size). Here is a quick write up on that tool - https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2019/ENU/AutoC... performance feedback tool

I would be concerned that migration is carrying over something that over time slows down the machine or maybe there is something that we can resolve in an update. I have asked the performance team to keep an eye out for a report, but just in case post a quick message on here and I can make sure it came through. It would have to be done while the problem is occurring, so if it does not come back, hopefully someone can run into this problem and send a report and let us know before fixing it.
