AutoCAD 2018 Output pdf file size is 10x normal

Hi,

I recently installed autocad 2018 and am having issues reducing the file size of outputted pdf's.  The file size that is output is generally 10 times larger than what I expect and what previous versions of autocad put out.

What I have tried:

Reinstalling autocad

I have compared the output size and plotter settings from other versions of autocad using the same files several times as well as comparing settings between versions.

I can make some adjustments that amount to a small change in the file size (0-10%) but nothing significant to get close to the expected output size.  (reducing vector/raster quality, excluding layer information, hyperlinks, bookmarks.  Tried different font handling.)

I am looking to get a pdf from the file.  Changing the settings from AutoCAD (General) to smallest file or dwg to pdf has not made much of a difference.

Let me know if you have any ideas.  It seems like this is a default setting that needs to be changed as AutoCAD prints to pdf like this right off the bat.  We have had this same issue with other computers trying to install 2018 as well in which we ultimately switched to 2016 instead.

Thanks,

Hi,

I have had this issue before. PDF's where plotting out with a size of 10-12mb when they should of been more like 3mb. I found the solution to the issue was to change the graphics properties to the plotter.

-- Select the plotter from the plot window

-- Click Properties (See Below)

-- Go to the graphics menu

-- Make sure that the true text selection is selected to true type as text rather than graphics.

Hope this helps you on your way.

Hi @Anonymous,

I'm sorry you are having problems with the PDF sizes coming out of AutoCAD 2018.  Try keeping Hyperlinks enabled as this will actually reduce the file size.  Make sure that you also do not convert the text to geometry in the PDF options. If you would like to etransmit a file or two, I am happy to see if I can make any suggestions to reduce the size.  I would need all xref files, fonts, and plot styles to produce the PDF just as you would in the office.  If this needs to remain confidential, you can email this data directly to me at john.vellek@autodesk.com. If you send me an email, please also include the URL of this thread so I can find my way back to it.

Please select the Accept as Solution button if my post solves your issue or answers your question.

This is the best file size reduction method I have tried yet.  I noticed you are using cutepdf.  AutoCAD PDF and DWG to PDF do not seem to have this option but Adobe PDF does and the file size was reduced by 50%.  Still a bigger file than normal but this is a significant change.

Show us your PLOT command pop-up screenshot and a screenshot of the PDF Options pop-up from there as well.

Or post a sample DWG file, we've all been using R2018 for some time now and not seeing any issues.

Did you use the migration tool to move content from an older version to 2018?
