Autocad 2018 Back to wrong drawing after editing xref

Here is the scenario...I have multiple DWG's open. I select an xref within my working DWG and open it for editing. After I finish, I save and close the xref DWG and AUTOCAD takes me to a complete different DWG and not back to the original DWG I was working in. Now I have to tab back through my open drawings to find my working drawing in order to continue working. This is an extreme waste of time. Is there a system variable for this?

What is your autocad version and update level? ABOUT command will tell you.
What is your OS?
Is this a sudden new problem, or did something change on your PC or software?

HI @Anonymous,

I see that you are visiting as a new member to the AutoCAD forum. Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

I am not able to duplicate this on my side using AutoCAD 2018.  I don't see any other cases similar to what you are describing.

Please tell me which version of AutoCAD you are using.  Does this happen with ALL drawings or only specific ones?  How many drawing files do you have open at once?

Can you share some files that exhibit the problem?

Please select the Accept as Solution button if my post solves your issue or answers your question.

Open 3 files that have xrefs embedded in them. While you are in the first drawing select the xref and open it. Edit it and save & close. After it closes you will not be in the file you opened it from. You will be in the last drawing on your drawings tab list.

Hi @Anonymous,

I went through this process with three host files open.  Each host had one xref attachment.

I was able to edit the xref in place and then Refclose. I was returned to the same host file that contained the xref I had just edited.

Please update your AutoCAD from your Desktop App or from your account page and let me know if the problem persists.

Please also try logging into your computer as a different user and let me know the results.

It sounds like the same behavior as the block editor. If I have 3 drawings open with tabs A, B, C from left to right and I'm working in the block editor in drawing A and I test the block in a new drawing, when I close the test block AutoCAD will dump me into drawing C. This is extremely annoying when I'm working with multiple versions of the same drawing and I'm not careful. It's easy to start editing drawing C without realizing it. I don't know why the active tab when the test block drawing is opened can't be reset as active on close.

Please try it again and do not edit in place. Open the xref using the right-click button after selecting. We have 50 seats of AutoCAD 2018 and it happens with every one. In all instances if the working drawing is not the last on your open drawings tabs, you will be send to the open drawing at the end when finished editing an xref. If you need screen shots or a video that shows this I can send to your e-mail address.

No fix so far, that's a flaw in all 2018 variants with XOPEN command.

Move your tab to the end first before your XOPEN is the workaround.
