AutoCAD 2017 Memory Leak?

Anonymous
Not applicable

So I was drafting away all day as I normally do... Later on in the day I noticed a lag when moving, drawing, trimming etc. So I check my RAM usage and it seemed quite high for the programs I had open. Open Task Manager and noticed acad.exe using over 2.5GB of RAM! So I save and close and reopen the same file (after closing all other programs). Now it's only using about 300MB of RAM. Simply zooming out 1 click and in 1 click repeatedly I can see the RAM usage start to grow but not drop at all. Within minutes its over 500MB by just zooming in and out.

If I open the same file in AutoCAD 2016 the RAM usage stays around 330MB no matter how much I zoom in and out.

System Info:

Windows 7 Home Premium

16GB RAM

250GB SSD

Intel i7 4790k CPU

Nvidia GTX 770

its not funny and this is call "complaining" for the products that we've purchased not "blaming" SIR.

It's funny how quickly people are to blame stuff out of their control when problems arise. It seems like some people are having graphics and/or system related trouble with 2017 but doesn't that happen with every release? The vast majority are not having problems. That is why people should make sure there are not other contributing factors before playing the blame game.

So rather than contributing to the conversation or offer another solution, you chose to complain about the people complaining?...

"...doesn't that happen with every release?"

No, never. 2014 ACAD worked fine... 2015 worked fine. 2016 worked fine. 2017 consumes RAM faster than all previous versions combined. And that's RAM, not DRAM, meaning it has nothing to do with my graphics hardware. If it's my system that's the problem then why haven't I had a single issue with any previous versions?

I'm not saying that there couldn't be some sort of compatibility issue with the many different hardware and software components that make up a system. But that's not my job to test. We pay Autodesk huge amounts of money for this software with the expectation that it will work better each time it is "improved". And since I have not changed anything on my end, am I out of line to think that the newest version of the same program, that i've been running for years without issue, is causing the problem?

Somehow you're not seeing SKETCHUP growing exponentially along with AutoCAD in your two screenshots 🙂

You've got something else going on.

I have to agree that it seems you have something else eating RAM (and other system resources)- AutoCAD is using less than 2G in your taskmanager screenshots, yet you are over 70% total physical memory usage- somewhere approaching 12G on your 16G system. Try clicking the "Show processes from all users" button at the bottom left of taskmanager window, then sort again by RAM usage, and see what else pops up near the top. I also note 121 process running, even with your (very capable) processor you may want to look at disabling things you don't need, or at least preventing autostart on things that you don't use often/daily. I have had AutoCAD 2017 use in the range of 5 to 6G on a (notebook) system with 16G total RAM without serious slowdown, but I have that system "leaned-out" so that there are seldom more than 65~70 running processes, and rarely more than 50~60% total physical memory in use. (i5 3230M, 16G RAM, and GT730 GPU, if it matters) Judging by your processor, I would guess that you have available dimm-slots in your motherboard, good rule of thumb is to fill them all, since open slots leave memory channels not being used by the processor.

RobDraw .. If this issue was happening to you, I am sure you would have tried all the recommended options first, only to hear AutoDesk run thru the same steps and then some while NEVER looking at their own software.  MANY MANY MANY times AutoDesk has ignored problems in their over-priced minimal update software and blamed the customer, and months later they quietly publish a solution that we have to seek out and find.

The solution with AutoDesk is almost always to just forget about bothering them (it's not their fault) and just go back to the last working version for the year or so it takes them to debug their software.

If you have to take all these steps to "clear the RAM" ... somebody has made things too darn hard. NOBODY should ever have to do such stupidly complicated things to run software. It sounds more like somebody named Autodesk needs to code better software.

Not saying this is technically incorrect ... but that is THE MOST RIDICULOUS THING I have heard this year. If anyone has to take these steps ... "somebody" is doing something wrong and it's not the end user.

From my experience, this type of problem is usually system related rather than at the program level. So, your assumptions about how I would handle it are wrong. Especially since I have never heard of anything similar to this related to the use of the program. Also, I have a pet peeve for AutoCAD.Desk bashers that refuse to believe that they (or their machine) might be doing something wrong.

Having the same memory leak problem on all our computer in the firm.

I'm searching for days now what the problem could be.

Autocad 2016 and previous versions never had or having problems.

Did almost everything that i can find on the internet.

Every possible setting/ variable in autocad changed what could have had effect.

(everything with regen, visibility options, hardware acceleration, ...

Changed al sign ins

Shutted down antivirus, ect

Changed register

Changed drivers

All the things that worked the last 10 years don't work now

what i see:

I start (every) drawing and it works perfect.

After 15 min it's start to lag

After 1 hour i can't do anything with our computers (+20).

Autocad 2016 works perfect...

Little update.

The way autocad 2017 connects to the autodesk accounts is not the same as autocad 2016.

We have a proxy and that is blocking the 2017 connection.

IT WORKS WITH 2016...

It's possible the failing connection is the cause of the "memory leak " symptom.

Not for sure yet ...

Keep testing it ...

Hello

I can confirm that ACAD 2017 is using more memory !
Compared to 2016/2015 !

2014 was better and 2012 was much better !!

Of course I have done tests on HUGE 2D DWGs (more than 300 Mb) !

Hi,
I am having exactly the same issue and it is really screwing with my productivity.

I am running Civil 3d 2017. When i first open the drawings the ram usage is fine, but it slowly creeps up and i am regularly seeing over 3 gig ram usage from the same drawings over an hour or so. The most easy way to push the ram usage up is by regularly switching tabs with viewports. Not sure if this is a cacheing type error.

To give it a go just open a DWG with a few tabs containing viewports and just cycle through them.

The only way i can seem to resolve this is to Save, close and reopen. Always auditing an purging. I keep forgetting to regularly close and open and get increasingly frustrated.

I run nothing else, of note, on my system other than my autodesk software to maximise the chance of spotting where things are going wrong. This issue is definately an Autodesk issue.

Hi,

welcome @Anonymous.autodesk.com!

>> To give it a go just open a DWG with a few tabs containing viewports and just cycle through them.

If the drawing has 3 layouts, and you open it, change from model to layout 1 ... how long does it need to switch the first time and then the second and third time?

Also does the memory raise when you change the first time from model to layout 1 ... or does the memory consumption raise with every change, also with the 10th change?

haven't found a solution.

thougt it could be a proxy problem ( couldn't connect to my account in autocad). Connection solved. Memory leak signs not ...

You are not the only one who see his productivity screwed up.

for me: after opening new autocad and new drawing the actions are instant and memory stays at 318-320.000 kb after +20changes.

This wil soon not be possible anymore
