AutoCAD 2017 - Copyclip Error

Anonymous
Not applicable

All,

I have recently started using 2017 on my PC, but am encountering issues using the COPYCLIP command.

Nearly every time I dip into a drawing to copyclip something out, I select the desired entities, press return and get the following error message:-

copyclip error.jpg

....and the info is not saved to the clipboard.

Now I know the drawings I try to copyclip from don't require recovery, so anyone got any ideas what's causing this?

I've tried toggling the PROXYNOTICE setting from 0 to 1, but this doesn't help.

Cheers,

Stuart

Any chance this drawing contains entities from a vertical product such as Civil 3D?

That is a common message in C3D, that I happen to believe is bogus, and this was semi-confirmed by Autodesk.

But you are saying that the entities are not being copied to the clipboard?

How are you confirming this?

You can check by doing this:

  1. Open Windows Explorer
  2. In the address bar, type in %TEMP% and press enter.
  3. This will take you to your temp location
  4. Now sort the files by date, newest at the top.
  5. Now go back to AutoCAD and perform your COPYCLIP command.
  6. Look back in windows explorer window.
  7. Is there a new .DWG file at the top of the list with a name something like "A$C388A21FA.DWG"?
  8. If so, that is the portion of the DWG that you just copied.

Hi,

No the drawing being copied from is an AutoCAD 2D layout drawing, and the entities being copied are all also 2D.

Additionally, the files you said to look for in the %TEMP% folder do not exist, i.e. nothing has been copied to clipboard.

Any ideas?

Hi Stuart,

Is is possible to attach the drawing to a post so I can take a look at it? If you are being prompted about display of proxy objects then there is more here than just a copy paste.  You might need to install an object enabler in order for this to behave properly.

Break this down to the bare bones.
Start a new, empty drawing (do not use a template)
Draw a single line or circle.
Can you COPYCLIP that?

John,

I can do, but before I do, I just wanted to let you know that this has happened when I try to copyclip from quite a few different drawings now, not just the one today.

The objects I have been trying to copyclip include standard text, mtext, drawing entities and images, all of which used to copyclip and paste no problem in the previous 2013 version of AutoCAD I was using.

Any ideas, or do you still want a drawing to play with?

Kind regards,

Hi,

Thanks - didn't think of that, but just tried that on a blank drawing as suggested and still get the error.

Looks like it's all copyclip operations then!

Hi Stuart,

It wouldn't hurt to attach one of the files but I am not convinced that it will show me much.

Are you able to CTRL-C and CTRL-V objects from one drawing to another?

John,

No - just tried CTRL C and it gives the same error message, so I'm not convinced it's the info in the drawings that is an issue, simply an error with the COPYCLIP function on my PC.

Just to let you know that I'm running 2017 SP1 and tried to add all available object enablers from downloads (there are only currently 3), but they weren't compatible with the 'normal' version of AutoCAD I am running in any case.

Thanks,

Stuart

Hey Stuart, can you use copy and paste in any other applications?

This might tell us if it is the clipboard that is broken.

Hi Stuart - thanks for your patience on this.

Let's see if your user profile is damaged in some fashion. Please create a new user account for your workstation. This account should be a full administrator. Then log off and re-logon to your computer but use the new account. Let's see if the problem in AutoCAD persists.

Please also attach one of your files so I can look - I figure it can't hurt 🙂

I'll get back to you when I can.

If you're in a bind, you can always revert to the "old way" of WBLOCK and INSERT.

Does that work?

Okay, well then how about this method. I don't recall the technical term for this act, and as I was trying it - I started getting the same error (I still think it's benign in my case), but anyway watch this. Note this is two separate drawings in the same session of AutoCAD (Actually Civil 3D 2017).

I have reason to believe that SP1 for 2017 introduced the copyclip error.

Can you verify this @john.vellek and if so, get a KB article posted, and a hotfix in the works?

Thanks.

Hi rkmcswain,

I am running AutoCAD 2017sp1 and cannot duplicate this. I have not found any articles or logged defects that reflect this issue.  I wonder if this is something more particular to Civil 3D.  Can you send me a file? I would like to try it with enablers installed as well as without them to see if there is any difference. I will also try rolling back to plain AutoCAD 2017 and then retry the sp1.

Guys,

Just for my benefit, why the talk of Civil 3D as my issue is with standard AutoCAD 2017 (I don't have Civil 3D on my machine)?

Kind regards,

Stuart
