Active command is cancelled when switching between drawings

I have mainly worked in AutoCAD 2013, until recently had to upgrade to 2019.

As often happens, upgrading creates more problems (especially of basic nature), than improving things overall 😞

I won't talk that my 2013 on Win 7 with average video card was much faster than my 2019 on Win 10 with good video card.

HERE IS MY PROBLEM.

Imagine a situation, that I bet is very typical for most of you!

I have several drawings open in one AutoCAD session. I start a command in a drawing and select several objects. Then I want to switch to another drawing, without cancelling the active command, just to check something. After returning to my original drawing I want to continue with the command and selection where I left off.

In AutoCAD 2013 this was working fine, without any problems.

In AutoCAD 2019 (not sure which other versions too) the active command is cancelled (like pressing ESC) as soon as you switch to another drawing/tab.

I believe this is a huge problem, since you can loose a lot of time's worth work (selecting objects, etc.) when you need to switch to another drawing temporarily.

What's even worse (and shame for Autodesk programmers), the active command gets cancelled even when you simply "restore down" and "maximize" AutoCAD window, without switching to another drawing - try it !

I'd appreciate if anyone has a solution for this issue. Thanks much!

I believe you may have been opening additional instances of AutoCAD vs. working drawings in the same session.  The behavior you describe has been normal for drawings within the same session for a very long time.

To run separate sessions of AutoCAD please see this >link<.

Hope bthis helps,

Blaine

Thanks Blain for your quick response.

Although I indeed use 2 instances of AutoCAD, apparently the problem is not because of that.

I closed all my instances, opened a fresh single instance, then opened 2 drawings, and the problem still persists.

Even with single instance and single drawing, when I start a command, then "restore down" and "maximize" the AutoCAD window, it cancels the command.

Hi,

Turns on PICKADD <2>. If the SELECT command is used, keeps objects selected after the command ends.

Let us check this System Variable & replay me

@hakobh - As blyoung wrote: In 2015, they changed a basic technique (they kicked an old technique)

since 2015 the object selection went by switching file windows inside one session, AND I HATE IT 😉

You got that wrong. That was a suggestion from blyoung as a workaround!

Learn to live with it

Thanks for your response Jayhar.

I already have PICKADD = 2.

Tried to select objects using SELECT, then ended the command. While the objects were still selected (blue grips), I switched to another window, and when switched back, the selection was gone.

Thanks for your response Sebastian.

I hear you on using 2 instances as a workaround.

Yeah, simply restart the command and hit "P" when selecting objects to get your previous selection set back.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

What if my command isn't dealing with a selection of objects. That is not a fix. A fix would be to reestablish how it worked in 2014. I need to be able to have a command stay active in one drawing tab while switching to another to take a look for referencing. This was , again , fully functional in 2014. Baffles my mind why they would remove such a feature.
