acad.exe process doesn't end on closing

I have a customer that's using Autocad 2015 that we took over for several months ago. We're using Bitdefender, which they're claiming is part of the issue. I've added exclusions for all the autodesk folders.

The issue is that when Autocad 2015 is started, the acad.exe process starts and once you close the program, it doesn't end. The next time you open Autocad, another acad.exe process starts taking up another 25% of the cpu usage. This goes on indefinitely until the customer's computers are too slow to do anything. The only two options they have are restarting the computer or manually closing the acad.exe process in the task manager. I can't really expect the customer to do either of these.

Does anyone know a solution to this problem other than uninstalling out managed antivirus if that's even the cause? I can add more exceptions. Is there a patch or update to fix this?

I am using Bitdefender and AutoCAD 2016 and don't seem to have that problem. If AutoCAD isn't ending why do you need to start another one, or is it that the display goes away but AutoCAD is still doing some process to try and close down? Have you looked at the temp files to see if they are deleted? What OS is your customer using? I am still running Windows 7.

I had this issue before. I believe it's related to info center/ communication center, somehow when the communication center can't close, it prevents acad.exe to end.

Try to disable communication center and see if it helps. Owen has an installer to easily disable it here.

The acad.exe process isn't ending. The Autocad program is closing. That means that the acad.exe process will keep running indefinitely until it is manually closed. If the user doesn't realize this and opens Autocad again, another instance of acad.exe opens.

My boss said he tried this already and no dice.

I completely disabled our managed AV to see if that would fix it. I'm not hopeful that it will, but at least this will appease the customer.

Any other ideas?

Hi @Anonymous,

It sounds like this is happening on multiple workstations.

  • Please ensure that all hotfixes and service packs have been applied to the AutoCAD 2015 installations. [Downloads here]
  • Next, I would disable UAC, FIrewall, and AV.
  • Logon as a new local administrator and see if the issue persists.
  • If it continues, run a Diagnostic Startup [MSConfig.exe] and disable all programs and then add them back one at a time.

Please update your results.

HI @Anonymous,

I found this article on AV exclusions that might help the situation. Please update your post to let me know if this helps or not.
